Now, with Crocodile Hunter: Collision Course on DVD, everyone can view just what he does, and does so well. MGM has done a fine job with this disc. The image, framed at 2.35:1 and anamorphic, is quite strong. Colors are nicely reproduced and the Australian scenery has never looked so good. It's far from the best transfer, but still is very pleasant to look at. The 5.1 English Dolby Digital track is also nice, but hardly anything to get overly excited about. Dialogue is clear (making Irwin's accent all the easier to understand), and there are moments of good separation between speakers. Altogether good but nothing too surprising. What is surprising on this disc is the number of supplements. The extras here really compliment the rest of the disc. Of great interest are three sections, one a documentary called "A Croc in Shot: The Making of Collision Course," as well as two long featurettes of behind-the-scenes shots, including "Lights! Camera! Animals!" with plenty of crocs and very poisonous snakes. In addition are four deleted scenes and an alternate ending, with introduction by director John Stainton. Not quite as interesting, and at times annoying since it blocks off a good portion of the screen, is the "crock track," which supplies a huge variety of facts (not always about the film). Not to be left out is a rather silly version of "Crocodile Rock" by Baha Men, outback interactive games, plus both the theatrical and teaser trailers. Finally, if this all wasn't enough, is a nicely organized photo gallery. Irwin's huge cable hit may lose a bit on the big screen due to a mediocre government subplot, but there's still enough here to keep any animal lover entertained.

For every Mission: Impossible there are at least ten TV show–based films that land on the screen with a thud. But with hyperkinetic Australian eccentric Steve Irwin at the helm, The Crocodile Hunter's big-screen premiere would be hard-pressed not to entertain. For his foray into filmdom, Animal Planet's Irwin plays it close to the khaki vest, and the result is surprisingly engaging -- if you think nature's pretty cool and get a bit of giddy delight each time he shouts "Crikey!" The plot follows Steve and his wife-cum-adventure partner, Terri, as they traverse the Outback, interacting with animals and preaching conservationism. Unbeknownst to the Irwins, part of a U.S. government satellite has crashed to earth, where it was swallowed by an ornery 12-foot croc. When covert agencies come looking for it, Steve thinks they are poachers and outmaneuvers them at every turn in order to keep the croc out of their hands. Director John Stainton devotes most of the 89 minutes to letting Steve be Steve. Like a Tasmanian Devil on his fifth cup of Joe, Irwin whizzes through the movie, tangling with a venomous, bird-eating spider, rescuing a helpless kangaroo joey, and wrestling crocs with characteristic aplomb. If Collision Course often seems like little more than a long installment of his show, it is an especially good one. Irwin is no Mel Gibson. He’s not even a Paul Hogan. He is simply himself -- a uniquely fearless, affable adventurer on a mission to educate and amaze. The Special Edition DVD offers a making-of documentary, a featurette on working with wild beasts, and several deleted scenes with introductions by director John Stainton.

The contagious gusto of nutty bloke Steve Irwin has given pause to many a restless channel surfer, who stop on his Animal Planet show to witness the one time he recoils from a springing crocodile a smidgeon too late. It turns out his mixture of clowning and teaching is enough to carry a children's movie, and that this movie maintains that fascination factor necessary to keep older viewers from squirming -- not unlike Irwin's poisonous snakes, which he handles as though emboldened by a pact with the devil. The Crocodile Hunter: Collision Course works because writer-producer-director John Stainton doesn't try to make actors of Irwin and his wife Terri, letting them play themselves rather than Indiana Jones or Crocodile Dundee-style adventurers, as well as talk to deadly wildlife instead of human actors. Stainton splits the narrative between the familiar pursuits of the Irwins and the kooky CIA retrieval mission, even changing the aspect ratio from the rectangular cinema format to the square TV format to distinguish them. When the plots do finally collide near the end, it's clever and humorous: As he grapples with one of the suits atop a moving SUV, Irwin continues to address the camera as though he were simply encountering a nastier species of predator. These fun moments come at the cost of a B-movie production design and an anonymous cast of bland performers, but there's one notable exception: the rotund, cartoonish Magda Szubanski, offering an irascible variation on her Mrs. Hoggett character from Babe. Crocodile Hunter does have its moments -- but it would be just as well to wait and accidentally discover it while channel surfing.

    Good Fun!

    Honestly, I didn't expect much from this movie, but we showed it in a group and everyone present found it very funny. It had a bumpy start, but as it got going, it got sillier and more clever. It was a good-humored send-up of the original series, spy movies and science fiction.

    ZzZzZzZz.......

    The movie The Crocodile Hunter is genuinely horrible. I can¿t believe a movie can be this bad. The plot of this so called ¿movie¿ stunk. My kids wouldn¿t even like it. I have to admit that this movie is O.K. to watch¿only if you have your eyes closed. This movie has some good characters from the T.V. show Crocodile Hunter. His wife and him go to Australia to find a crocodile when they both get tangled in a huge misunderstanding that they took jewels from a gang boss. If you¿re a die hard fan of Steve Erwin, then you might like it. Other than that I would suggest that you stay clear from it.

    A must-see for comedy-loving environmentalists

    This movie is as close to nonfiction as a fiction movie can get. The plot is obviously one that could never happen in real life, but Steve and Terri treat it as real. Such a fabulous job on every one's part!
