The Crook

Overview

Simon Jean-Claude Trintignant gets out of prison and summons his old friend Charles Charles Gerard and Martine Christine Lelouch, his one time lover now married to a wealthy man. Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Craig Butler
At the time of its release, The Crook was criticized for being slick and superficial -- but how many crime caper comedies are known for their depth? In fact, Crook is an immensely entertaining example of this genre of film. Yes, it's superficial -- but it's also quite artfully made. Director/co-writer/co-cinematographer Claude Lelouch has out together a film that is intricately plotted -- and even more intricately edited. One really needs to pay attention during Crook, for the film flashes backward and forward frequently -- but Lelouch doesn't make the transitions obvious. This makes the whole film a puzzle, and one that enterprising viewers will find great fun. Lelouch's firm, sure hand is indispensable -- but so is his leading man. Jean-Claude Trintignant shows a flair for comedy that will surprise those who know him from his more serious roles, while maintaining his charm and a ruthless sensibility that is essential. The gorgeous Christine Lelouch and the adept Charles Gerard also make valuable contributions, as does Daniele Delorme. Throw in a great Parisian car chase, some Francis Lai music, an amusing film-within-a-film musical parody, and a very funny sequence involving the phrase "Merci, Simca," and you have a deft, pleasurable little thriller.
