Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Andrew Farach-Colton
Janácek's The Cunning Little Vixen may be the only opera inspired by a comic strip. Rudolf Tesnohlídek's fanciful tale about the intertwining lives of animals and humans and the renewing power of nature is equally poignant and humorous, inspiring one of the composer's richest scores. Although there are no formal arias, the music overflows with memorable tunes and is cloaked in brilliant orchestral colors. This imaginative 1995 production from the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris is led by Sir Charles Mackerras, the greatest Janácek conductor on the scene today. Veteran baritone Thomas Allen is both vocally and dramatically commanding as the heroic forester, and Eva Jenis, a silver-voiced young soprano, makes a sly yet highly sympathetic vixen. The costumes and sets are vivid and colorful -- they seem like a children's book come to life. A triumphant presentation of one of the most original -- and loveable -- operas in the entire repertory. Sung in Czech with English subtitles.

    Cunning Little Vixen

Conductor Charles Mackerras is best in this music, and he leads the Orchestre de Paris in this live performance from '95. Thomas Allen is very good as the Forester. The other singers are Czechs and Slovacs I've never heard of, and they all do well. The sets aren't much, but the costumes are excellent, and there are 2 dozen dancers. Subtitles are in English and French. I've never been much enthused by operas in which people dress like animals and act accordingly, but this would probably be good for kids if you're unfortunate enough to have any.
