Overview

Can a rough and tumble hockey player and a snooty ice dancer find love and a gold medal at the same time? That's the burning (or more appropriately freezing) question in this romantic drama. Kate Moseley (Moira Kelly) is a world-class figure skater training for the Olympics; she has genuine talent, but years of being spoiled by her wealthy family have made her all but impossible to work with. Doug Dorsey (D.B. Sweeney) is a hockey player with drive, skill, and a full complement of arrogance; his team is also on the fast track to the Olympics. Unfortunately, an eye injury suffered during a game affects Doug's peripheral vision enough to put him on the bench for the rest of the season. At the same time, Kate's colossal ego scares off yet another skating partner, and her coach, Anton (Roy Dotrice), needs to find a replacement as soon as possible. Desperate to stay in Olympic competition, Doug agrees to try working as Kate's partner, even though he has a hockey player's macho contempt for figure skating. Needless to say, the first few practices between Kate and Doug do not go well, but in time they learn to work together and become a pair to be reckoned with both on and off the ice. The Cutting Edge was released within a few months of the 1992 Winter Olympic Games.

All Movie Guide - Michael Costello
Paul Michael Glaser's formulaic romance sports movie is more entertaining than it has any right to be. The story of a spoiled-princess figure skater partnered with a washed-up, working-class hockey player in hopes of competing for an Olympic doubles title, it works over every cliché about mismatched lovers and long-shot athletes, but still manages to hold one's interest. To the extent that it works, credit must go to stars, Moira Kelly and D.B. Sweeney, who bring a passionate commitment to these stock parts, along with an evident athleticism that must have kept the use of stunt people to a minimum. Veteran stage actor Roy Dotrice and The Stepfather (1987) star Terry O'Quinn also add something distinctive. Glaser moves the story at along brisk pace, the skating routines are well-done, and although the denouement is visible from a distance, one can still admire the professionalism of the film's execution. The film was a modest hit, yet no one involved seems to have benefited but first-time writer Tony Gilroy, who has gone on to a very successful career.

This movie has become not only one my favorite movies, but also my husband's. This is one of the few movies that I watch over and over again. I think the Moira Kelly and D.B. Sweeney are great. I wish they both were in more movies.

This is one of my favorite all-time movies ever! And I'm pretty picky about what I like. I really enjoyed it the first time I watched it when I was 10. My boyfriend also remembers watching this movie when he was younger. He and I talked about it and remembered having crushes on Moira Kelley and DB Sweeney! How cute is that?! I've been watching it once every couple of years and I finally bought myself a copy. Now i watch it once every couple of months and it seems to get better everytime I watch it! It doesn't matter that I practically memorized the lines (haha) or that I already know what's going to happen; I still love the movie! I have not encountered one person who doesn't like this movie. It's amazing. Watch it! You'll fall in love~

I was not really Interested with Love Stories. But when I watch The Cutting Edge it changed my mind. The movie was awsome, it has half sports and half a love story. If I was you I would watch it over and over. I have why shouldn't you?

I only saw this movie for the first time a few days ago on one of the movie channels from Direct TV. I had never heard of this movie until then. The music is awesome! And the actors are perfect for one another. It helps that both D.B. Sweeney and Moira Kelly can actually skate (after all D.B. played some hockey in real life as well as baseball). The love/hate relationship is played perfectly between the two in this movie. For those who love to watch a good romance movie, with likeable characters who ''get the job done'', this movie is it. The soundtrack is hard to find when you fall in love with the music. There are only a few copies to be found and you pay a high price for it. But it was well worth it!

I first saw this movie about a month ago.ABC Family premimered the spin off of the Cutting Edge," Cutting Edge 2-Going For The Gold."It picks up 21 years later and they have a daugher together.Who they coach and are training to go to the olyimpics. So they had like a marathan and showed them both in one night.I fell in love with the movie and when I heard that the 2nd one was coming to DVD,I was hoping the 1st one would be too.At the time,I didn't know it was already on DVD.Then one night I was in the store and saw it.I was so happy.I bought it and watched it that night when I got home.I watch it all the time.I am a professional dancer and I skate on the side.Skating is good balance for a dancer.So...I love this movie and think that the whole world will fall in love this movie.I love DB Sweeney. He is so hot in that movie.I wish and hope to see them in another movie soon. The 2nd one is good too.And the kid is hot.But the 1st Cutting Edge is the best out of the 2.I love this movie and hope that more people see this movie. It's a great movie to see.Buy it,you'll fall in love.

I really like this movie. In fact, I have watched it several times. It is a very upbeat, romantic comedy with the added excitement of Olympic competition. Very well done. D.B. Sweeney and Moira Kelley are great in their leading roles - very believable - and they are well supported by Roy Dotrice and Terry O'Quinn. I enjoy a movie that leaves you feeling better when it is over than you did when it started. This is the effect The Cutting Edge has on me. I would like to see more of D.B. Sweeney in this type of role.

You don't really think of it as a romanceÉit is a very interesting movie and I never thought of it as a romanceÉthe romance (i am using that word way too much) sort of seeps in. I reccommend it very highly, especially to people who love to watch figure skating and enjoy lightly crude comedy.

I saw this movie a week ago on PAX. It was pretty cool! But it was also real dramatic because the people argued alot. I ice skate, and just today, my friend skated to their freeskate! So i thought to myself 'Hey i should tell other people about this movie.' so, i'm doing it right now! The movie revolves around Kate and Doug who are very oppisite people but are in LOVE with each other, It also focuses on the intense training of figure skating and preperations of the biggest competition in the world.

This movie was worth seeing. Its how two people fall in love that seem so opposite that it would be impossible. Well love is never impossible and this movie shows that you can find love in the least likely place and its an excellent family film. I reccomend watching it because it always has comedy in it and its an inspiration to the audience.

What can one say about "The Cutting Edge" that hasn't already been said? It's the only film that's ever motivated me to write a letter to one of its stars (Moira Kelly -- and yes, she wrote back). I saw TCE the first time the year after it was released. I've purchased a copy of it at least twice (first on VHS), and I'm about to buy another copy. It's got to be one of the most "addicting" films ever made! Absolutely wonderful!

There's a reason why this movie has stuck around since 1992. I watch it about once a year to chase the blues a way. It has a great cast, a funny script like an old screwball romantic comedy. It has the right touch of outrageous. You don't have to like figure skating to be amused by it but it helps.
