Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
The science behind this one may be a little shaky -- the possibility of a new Ice Age sweeping the planet overnight is pretty remote. But once you can get past the basic implausibility of the premise, you'll find that The Day After Tomorrow is, well, one of the coolest pictures to come along in quite a while. It's really a throwback to those great Irwin Allen disaster movies of the '60s and '70s. Allen's 1961 Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, for example, took the opposite tack and posited that Earth's atmosphere could catch fire overnight. You take a group of people with disparate backgrounds, interests, and agendas; throw them together in a life-threatening situation caused by Mother Nature; and see how many of them survive to discover a means of reversing (or escaping) the effects of the calamity. In this case, climatologist Jack Hall (Dennis Quaid), having foretold the possibility of global warming suddenly triggering a new Ice Age, gets no satisfaction from seeing his prediction come true -- because his son Sam (Jake Gyllenhaal) is trapped in New York City, which has already been swamped by a tidal wave and essentially frozen solid. As the planetary freezing moves southward, Jack heads northward to rescue Sam and others that may have survived. Director Roland Emmerich, no stranger to such apocalyptic goings-on, marshals assistance from his art director, cinematographer, and special-effects team to make this frigid farrago convincing, and it's to his credit that he succeeds admirably. Formulaic plotting and stereotypical characters aside, The Day After Tomorrow, like Jack Hill himself, plots a course and doggedly pursues it to a successful conclusion. Although the submersion of Manhattan by tidal wave was done fairly convincingly in 1933's Deluge, that film's visuals don't begin to compare to the digital magic conjured up by Emmerich's special-effects sorcerers. There probably isn't a viewer on the planet -- in hot or cold climes -- that won't feel a chill up his or her spine when the Statue of Liberty is swept under by a monster tsunami. Quaid and Gyllenhaal are appropriately stolid in their roles and more than adequately supported by Ian Holm, Sela Ward, Jay O. Sanders, and others. Relative newcomer Emmy Rossum makes a strong showing as Jake's plucky companion and (if she lives through the ordeal) probable girlfriend. Providing old-fashioned thrills served up with new-fangled technology, The Day After Tomorrow makes an ideal "popcorn movie," and one that will certainly stand the test of time with repeat viewings.

Some people may think that it was just special effects, but the time is coming and sooner than we all want to accept. It is a great movie that should make people stop and think...the special effects were very good...and little Emmy is just too beautiful.

You can snoot the ax murder that's right behind you, but there's nothing you can do about the weather. An excellent choice.

This was a great entertaining flick! The Cast was great, and acting well done. While the possibility may or may not be far fetched, it gives us all something to think about! It's too bad that Mr. Rusch (see reviews) seems to think the only ones responsible for destroying the planet are Republicans - I imagine, he walks everywhere, and never wears anything other than clothing and shoes made from natural fibers harvested by hand, and eats nothing unless he grew it himself (grown organically of course!)

Excellent disaster movie, I saw it at the theatre when it came out, I was so into the movie I didn't notice we had a heck of a storm going on outside.

If you watch this movie you will understand what can happen if we don't start treatin mother earth better. As the movie demonstrates Global warming is not fun just causes exciting adventures. Oh yeah GW also kills people and thats just not a good thing unless its your nosy classmate who freezes. So watch this movie and start recycling.

The Day After tommorow was an excellent movie. It was based mainly on the Global Warming affect and the world going into a Ice Age. The main character was a scientist who studied climate. In an impoartant meeting with ambassadors from all over the world he tried to warn the rest of the world of the Global Warming affect, but they would not listen. In the outcome, at an increasing rate, the world went into an Ice Age. There were tornadoes in Los Angeles and hurricanes in New York. The climate scientist had a son who was stuck in New York when the Ice Age began. The Statue of Liberty was knocked down and the city of New York was flooded. The closest place he could run to was the city library. He ran into the library with his friends where they stayed for the next couple of days. The temperatures began to drop quickly. Learning so much from his father, he had to figure out what to do to save himself and whoever else he could.

I would have given this movie zero stars but it was not an option. Anyone who thinks this movie has any scientific value (much less entertainment value) should take a good hard look at themselves! If this movie is based on any sort of scientific reality then 'Jurassic Park' is a documentary. I would have walked out in the theatres but it was so bad I had to see how it would end, which was shockingly stupid. This movie makes 'Hudson Hawk' look like 'Citizen Kane.' Everyone I know who has seen it found the whole thing appalling. I mean...cold that CHASES PEOPLE?! Give me a break! This movie gets an 'F' in virtually every category in my book. A terrible waste of time.

I am rating this movie low because there was so much hype for it but it just flat out did not live up to it. It was the most boring movie I have ever seen. If you have been having trouble sleeping lately, I would recommend you throw your seeping pills away and rent the day after tomorrow. Otherwise do not waste your money on this movie. The only reason i did not rate this movie at one star was because of the special affects but otherwise there is no plot what so ever. This movie wasted 2 hours of my life that I cannot get back.

The SP FX are wonderful! Jake and Dennis are wonderful, as usual! The point of the movie is wonderful, open your eyes man! The loyality and respect between father/son, man/dog, girl/boy, people/planet is wonderful! The "wolves scene" is NOT wonderful but then 'nothing is perfect.' Just take this movie for what it is...a Hollywood joyride through something that "could" happen, maybe not just like this movie but then... how do we know for sure?!

I love weather related movies and this is one of my favorites. I know it will probably never happen, but it sure is fun to watch.

At the beginning of the movie I thought that it was to take a long while to get to the point but the event just continue to come. I think this movie is very good with a great climax of the story. The movie is brilliantly acted out with a good selection of actors to play the part in the movie. This movie can make us think twice about what we do. This movie is an educational that might help us in the future. This movie might help stop pollution in the world we live in. Or it would at least help cut it down a bit. This movie may have people think of the question: what if? So I give this movie a five star rating.

This movie is backed by just enough information to seem real. I would give this movie 8 stars if I could. Fantastic effects to back a great concept. This movie is in my top 10 of all time.

Well, like I said, the special effects were amazing. I think the tornadoes was the best special effect of all, though New York under water was pretty good, too. It's a movie that makes you think and leaves you hanging. Some things you can predict, others you can't. It is a FANTASTIC movie! A+

This movie left me on the edge of my seat wondering what was going to happen next. It was unpredictable, which made it amazing. The actors are so well into their parts and it almost seems like you're there. It was THE BEST MOVIE EVER. I reccomend it to ages 9+ becuase there is a seen with wolves that may scare kids.(It scared my friend's 8 year old sibling)

The Day After Tommorrow keeps you hooked from begginning to end. By far it is the best "end of the world" movies. The plot was superb compared to similar movies. Truly an unforgettable movie. Would recommend to everyone.

when i watched it, I LAUGHED at the bad acting, unbelievable series of events and random radioative wolves thrown in for thrill... if you have bad taste in movies, you'll love it!

I am glad I only spend $2.59 to rent this movie. Unbelieveable story lines made this feature laughable. Get a group of friends to watch it and enjoy picking this one apart. A 'B' movie with an 'F' grade

Dennis Quaid is drawn to save his son who is trapped in a tsunami that is the biggest one ever in New York City.He stops at nothing to make sure of his son's well being.

The Day After Tomorrow Movie Review The Day After Tomorrow features many actors like Dennis Quid, Jake Gyllenhaal, Dash Mihok, and Emmy Rossum. The action started right away in this movie. In the beginning I saw an earthquake that swept people away. Then there seemed to be all kinds of natural disasters everywhere. This movie takes a big budget, special-effects filled look at what might happen if the greenhouse effect and global warming result in disaster after disaster. We see worldwide catastrophe and disasters, including hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, tidal waves, flood and the beginning of the next Ice Age. A scientist who studies the way weather patterns changed in the past tries to save the world from the effects of global warming. But his son was in New York City as part of scholastic competition, when the city was overwhelmed by the chilling beginnings of the new ice age. So not only must he save the world, he must also prove to his son that he can still rely on him. The movie is 2hrs 4mins and it comes into different languages Spanish and English, the movie was brought out May 28th 2004. I saw it in English, in the Fall of 2005. The rating *** (3) stars out of *****(5) stars. The day after tomorrow is a type of movie that has your attention and makes you think what might happen next, it has a social message attached. The film might not blow some people away depended on what your interest maybe. You could find more information by watching the movie or even checking out other movie reviews online at and choose from the menu The Day After Tomorrow. Lakesha Gaither Period 1-2

I didn't thought that this movie was going to be like this : just another movie with great special effects. It was 2 hours long, and you saw one big disaster after another in this movie.I didn't knew that something like this could happen in the future. I didn't know that such devestation could be this big. Acording to the movie, the reason for these disasters is global warming. This all happens because of air polution like burning fuel, smoke from factories, and automobiles. In this movie a lot of people died, and a lot of buildings were destroy by tornadoes. The scenes were very wild and out of control. The people didn't knew what to do. People wanted to go down south because of the weather.I guess they didn't thought it was not going to be real cold. Even the birds were going down south and the animal were acting kind of wierd, maybe because of the change of the weather or it could be a warning to the people that something was going to happen. The animals could sense doom before the humans. I thought that this movie was not going to be this interesting. I give this movie a 9 out of 10.

Title: The Day After Tomorrow The main Characters Jack Hall and Sam , are played by the fine actors Dennis Quaid and Jake Gyllenhaal . Additionally Emmy Rossum, Sela Ward, and Ian Holm are also in this movie. This movie is 123 minutes , filmed in English , and is rat ed PG-13 . I enjoyed the movie because the actors (Dennis Quaid, Jake Gyllenhaal, Emmy Rossum, Sela Ward, and Ian Holm) are very excellent and they have a lot of talent. I think the movie was really great. If you ask me on a scale from 1-10 the movie is most definitely a 10. I like the part when Sam was in the cold, cold water calling his dad about to freeze death. The part that was so sad is when the tornado hit and killed all those people. Then when a tidal wave almost wipes out the whole New York City and the entire Northern Hemisphere begins to freeze solid. Sam's brave dad and some workers try to go help Sam. The story took place in New York City, and Los Angeles. This movie shows action, science fiction, and thriller. Jack Hall had to go save his son before he froze to death. Hopefully he made it in time. When Laura Chapman tried to save these people from drowning and freezing to death she got cut and got frost bitten, and was sick. This movie came out in theatre in May 28, 2004 and on DVD in October 12, 2004.

The plot of this film was extremely hokey and clumsy. Dennis Quaid appeared ready to hike 1000 miles through the snow, not to save his son, but to get as far away from this disaster of a movie as possible. The story was silly, perhaps intended to scare people into treating the environment and third world countries better. But, unfortunately, it merely comes off as garbled and preachy. It will probably end up setting back the movements it tries to champion. Gyllenhaal and Quiad are good actors, but this movie lets them down. I give it an extra star only because the special effects were really good.

The movie The Day After Tomorrow was very interesting . It was a movie that I wouldn't imagine myself going to see in a million years, but we saw it in our science class . The movie is about a scientist who studies the ways weather patterns changed in the past. Professor Adrian Hall (Quaid), tries to save the world from the effects of global warming . He is also trying to get to his son, Sam (Gyllenhaal), who was in New York City as part of a scholastic competition . However, the entire northern hemisphere was overwhelmed by the chilling beginnings of the new Ice Age. In addition to all of the other challenges Dr. Hall faces, he's also going against the flow of all other living things, as they race south to warmer climes, for he is the only one going north.
