Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Dan Jardine
Although it appeared almost fifteen years after the end of World War II, The Diary of Anne Frank was one of the first post-war films to confront the Holocaust on such human terms. The Frank family is an "every family," made to bear testimony for all the victims of the Nazi genocide. It is a weight that the film bears with dignity, although the filmmaker's self-consciousness occasionally causes the pace to drag. Shooting in panoramic Cinemascope, Oscar-winning cinematographer William C. Mellor and director George Stevens capture the situation's overwhelming claustrophobia, as the two families are forced to cohabit in cave-like conditions, remain quiet all day, and block up the windows at night; the claustrophobia gradually creates a palpable sense of audience dread. Shelley Winters's near-hysterical performance garnered her an Oscar, but she sometimes seems to be in a different movie from her more controlled co-stars. Millie Perkins was a little old (21) for the title role, but she effectively conveys Anne's painful adolescent confusion. The strength of both families in the face of such frightening conditions provides the film with a moral center and tragic power that overcome its minor weaknesses.

    A beautiful depiction

What a heroic person Anne Frank was!

George Stevens has illuminated this persons courageous life.

    She is an inspiration.

    Amazing!

I teach 8th grade Language Arts and it was a movie that I had to talk them into watching, simply because it was black and white. I knew they would throw a fit. We had just finished reading the book so I really talked up this movie...even though I had not yet seen it myself! I think that the whole entire class thought it was wonderful! I found that I couldn't take my eyes off of it the whole time! The part that got the students the most was when there was a burglar downstairs and you thought the cat was going to make a bunch of noise. The students were on the edge of their seats. The ending of the movie, for me, was very emotional because of all they had been through. Hearing the sirens that final time and knowing they were coming for them was heartbreaking!

    Terrific!

We watched this movie in my 8th grade english class while studying World War II and I loved it so much that I bought it and watched it with my family. The acting and filming is wonderful (it is in black and white) and the ending is so sad. My favorite line is that of Otto Frank when they all know they were going to be captured by the Nazis at the ending. It goes, "For two years now we have lived in fear. Now we can live in hope." It gets me every time.

    Amazing

I am in 9th grade, & my Language Arts Class watched this movie after we read the play from our textbooks. I absolutley LOVE black & white films, & this is no exception. This movie is amazing. I just love Shelley Winters as Mrs. Van Daan. I am thinking about purchasing it so my family can watch it too.

Harrowing Family Saga Amidst The Changing Winds of War

'The Diary of Anne Frank' is based on the tragic best selling diary of a young girl¿s real life account of her secret existence under Nazi persecution. After the war breaks out, Anne¿s prudent father, Otto (Joseph Schildkraut) whisks the family underground to avoid being sent to a concentration camp. Together with another family, the Franks attempt to wait out the prospect of being discovered in a cramped attic adjacent a factory run by the resistance. Anne (Millie Perkins) endures the hardship, danger and sadness of World War II, but never without hope and astonishment for a better tomorrow. Petronella (Shelly Winters) and Hans van Daan (Lou Jacobi) are also in hiding with the Franks and their son, Peter (Richard Beymer). But the bond of loyalty that develops between Peter and Anne is threatened by Hans¿ greed and distemper. Despite being forced by Fox to shoot his film in the widescreen process of Cinemascope, director George Stevens nevertheless managed to capture the claustrophobic atmosphere of a regime slowly closing in on the Frank¿s precarious abode. Stevens, a member of the first American film corps that liberated several Nazi concentration camps with the allies, was appalled by the overwhelming scope of genocide he encountered. His outrage is channeled on this occasion into a poignant, visceral and emotionally stirring production that not only manages to capture the essence of the period, but rightfully preserves the memory of Anne Frank ¿ a young girl, aged well beyond her years, who had the clairvoyance to put onto paper one of the most heartbreaking and genuine accounts of the second world war. Fox gives us a stunning B&W anamorphic picture with zero film grain, solid blacks, fine detail and remarkable clarity. Really, there's nothing to complain about in this visual presentation. The audio is equally impressive. The musical score is spread across all five channels and offers a genuinely moving experience. The extras include a 90 minute documentary on the real Anne Frank, the film and WWII, some period featurettes and the original theatrical trailer.

    Great movie

This was a really uplifting movie. It was really sad. I don't know what I would do if I was Ann back then. She was the strongest girl out of her sister and mother. I really look up to her.
