The Dinner Game

( 8 )

Overview

A big hit in its native France, the witty comedy The Dinner Game gets a fair digital release from Lions Gate Home Entertainment. There is no faulting the disc's technical merits: the widescreen anamorphic transfer is flawless and the French-language Dolby audio track sounds great. Unfortunately, Lions Gate dropped the ball when dealing with subtitles. Instead of employing removable subtitles, they are burned into the movie print itself and sometimes can't be seen. As with video, this is a silly choice no matter ...

As with video, this is a silly choice no matter what color the subtitles are, as they often disappear into the background when they match the screen action. The subtitles aren't removable, so if you speak French, you are compelled to read along in English (which is like watching TV when it's accidentally set to the closed-captioned option). This is a common mistake found in American foreign language DVDs and one that is so easy to correct. Thankfully, The Dinner Game is funny enough that you quickly forget this disc's flaws and just enjoy the movie.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Tom Wiener
Comedies which rely on persons of limited intelligence to generate laughs range from the sublime (the work of Laurel and Hardy) to the questionable (Dumb and Dumber). In the case of Francis Veber's The Dinner Game, the laughs are on the allegedly intelligent and cultured Pierre Brochant (Thierry Lhermitte), and not at the expense of the dimwitted Francois Pignon (Jacques Villeret). Francois is the innocent victim of an elaborate joke Pierre and his friends play, but when Pierre finds himself in need of a true friend, the ever-trusting Francois is his man. In Veber's skilled hands, this is a comedy with neither malice nor mush, just a witty examination of bourgeois pretensions. One shudders to think how an American remake with, say, Adam Sandler, is likely to contain big helpings of both elements.

    Cruelly funny and hilariously cruel

Adapted from a play, great actors, impossible situations, and one completely stupid guy who, in the end, steals the show. A jewel of a movie!

The funniest movie I have ever seen

I have seen some very funny films but this actually made me laugh from beginning to end. The funniest thing is how the men who think they are better than poor Mr. Pignon are actually just as foolish in their own way.

    wonderful

the previous posting by karen 'who loves all things french' obviously does not understand all things french. there is absolutely no parallel between the scene where the con pretends to be a 'belgian' director and americans who mock polish people. nope, this is not so much a joke about ethnicity as about a people whose cultures and countries are so similar, but ultimately antagonistic. . . more like americans and canadians who share a common language and north american culture.

    Hysterical!

I absolutely love this film. For those who depend on the subtitles, some of the more hilarious parts are less effective, but it is still a very funny film. I particularly love the scene where the ''con'' pretends to be a Belgian film producer - his accent is priceless - the ''in'' joke of this is that the french tend to joke about belgians the way americans used to joke about the polish. Although it seems to be a bit mean spirited at first, the director (and the actors)have ensured that the ''con'' is totally sympathetic and we appreciate him from the start, despite his shortcomings. This is truly a ''don't miss!'' film.
