Originally airing on the BBC from 1977-78 and crossing the pond for a run on PBS's Masterpiece Theatre in 1979, The Duchess of Duke Street remains a classic example of period drama. Upstairs, Downstairs creator John Hawkesworth brought the real-life tale of hotel proprietor Rosa Lewis to life with the fictional character Louisa Leyton Gemma Jones. Initially aspiring to nothing more than a job in the kitchen of a notable London hotel, Leyton finds herself moving up the ladder until she is running the Bentinck Hotel on Duke Street. Along with her rise in rank comes a degree of notoriety -- as well as the attentions of the aristocratic Charlie Tyrrell Christopher Cazenove, with whom she has an affair. Sprawling in scope and period detail, the concluding series of The Duchess of Duke Street is yet another example of the BBC's knack for bringing the past to life.

The second series of the Duchess of Duke Street is every bit as good as the first, as it brings you along on its continuing journey into the world of Louisa and those colorful characters and places that populate her life.
