Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide
Legend has it that director Teruo Ishii made The Executioner under duress, shooting it to honor his contract with Toei, but doing his best to subvert the finished product wherever he could. This goes a long way toward explaining The Executioner's schizophrenic tone. There are plenty of kung fu thrills and yet the whole story is suffused with a strange sense of humor that ranges from the surreal (a character dies begging another character to take over his car payments!) to the juvenile (virtually anything involving Go Eiji's perpetually randy character). It also has strange dollops of sleaze thrown in without rhyme or reason, like an evil yakuza stripping his girlfriend nude for the entertainment of party guests. Potential viewers who find the aforementioned too bizarre should probably pass on the film. However, any cult movie enthusiast with an appreciation for the bizarre will want to see The Executioner -- the pace is swift, the plotline unpredictable in its craziness, the action is plentiful, and Sonny Chiba excels at both the physical and comedic demands of his role. Ultimately, The Executioner is probably best left to Chiba's hardcore fans, but they are likely to be fascinated by its bizarre excesses.
