In this blend of psychological thriller and courtroom drama, Emily Rose (Jennifer Carpenter) is a 19-year-old college student who begins displaying bizarre and troubling behavior; as her actions become increasingly destructive and shocking, Emily begins speaking in strange tongues and destroying religious symbols that surround her. Emily's parents believe that their daughter has become possessed of the devil, and the Catholic Church agrees to authorize an exorcism of the young woman. As Father Moore (Tom Wilkinson) attempts to drive the demons from Emily's body, the girl dies in the midst of the taxing ceremonies, and Father Moore finds himself charged with negligent homicide. Attorney Erin Bruner (Laura Linney) is hired to represent Father Moore against prosecutor Ethan Thomas (Campbell Scott), who intends to prove there were concrete medical explanations for Emily's behaviors, including epilepsy and schizophrenia, all leading to a heated courtroom debate between the notions of faith and science. The Exorcism of Emily Rose was inspired by the real-life story of Anneliese Michel, a young woman from Germany who died in 1976 after priests in Wurzburg spent eight months attempting to exorcise demons from her body.

I have to say that I was thoroughly scared and unable to sleep after seeing this movie. I was even scared at the theatre! It was so dark there, and it almost seemed as if I were the only one in there watching the movie. A very good movie, except I would have liked more of the story, and less of the courtroom.
As one who studied under the Exorcist for one of America's Archdiocese, and as one who has witnessed posession, this movie is not only accurate, but quite Theologically valid. If you're looking for hollywood spooks like "The Exorcist", this isn't your flick. But if you Love God and believe there is an Enemy out there called the 'devil', this movie is a must see. Very well put together and unbiassed. Arguments for and against authentic posession are presented extremely well.
This Catholic movie is so excellent. It is a true story about a Catholic German woman who possessed by the six devils. She died on July 1, 1976. Sad! Thumb up! I give five stars.
The movie was so frightening because it is actually a true story. After I watched that movie, it's really hard for me to sleep at night and I'm always thinking about waking up 3 am in the morning. It also helped me to be more in touch with God and to have more faith in Him. This is a must-seen movie!
this movie rocks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don't scare easily. When I was thirteen, I would walk to the video store right after it got dark and I would rent a few scary movies. Then, I would go into my bedroom, turn off the lights and watch them by myself. For the most part, my imagination can conjure up scarier things than anyone has put in movie or book. I must admit though that The Exorcism of Emily Rosefreaked the crap out of me! I know that part of that is because it is a true story. I know that demons can possess a person and to me that is the scariest thing that could ever happen to someone. If you watch this movie, I hope you are prepared to be terrified.
This movie is chilling and scary, full of chills and thrills. It tells of Emily Rose, a girl that died during an exorcism. With chilling visits with the devil, it is scary and wonderfully played out.
After watching this movie I can say that this was one of the better horror movies of 2005. It's not really set up like a lot of other horror movies, it goes in a different direction. There are certainly several frightening parts in this film, but nothing that jumps out really scary. Overall, very interesting story and very entertaining until the end.
I wouldn't call this a "horror" movie, it's more of a courtroom drama than anything else. Interesting story, but don't expect anything like "The Exorcist."
Perry Mason meets Linda Blair's Reagan from the Exorcist. Not a good combination and an overly long courtroom waste.
Please don't listen to those who are only here for one thing, which is to bash Catholicism with their own brand of hypocritic theories. The movie is excellent. If you're looking for a horror story, look elsewhere. If you're looking for TRUTH, look here.
Wow that was some performance by the title character and looked like it was painful to do but the story was interesting and most likely we were all reminded of another exorcist movie in the 70s that had its "head spinning" moments? Anyway the movie is about the aftermath of an exorcism that killed the one who supposedly had something inside her and thus the priest with his lawyer are in court to examine what exactly happened.
This movie is a prime example of the statement Jesus said to His persecutors, "How can Satan cast out Satan?" There is a trilogy of evil reigning Monarch Demons that reside over the Catholic Church today(and have since the Catholic Church's inception by these demons)and whose names are in scripted in the Holy Word of God for our warning. The BEAST who is the Demon behind the worship of the Pope as Vicar of Christ ASHTEROTH who parades around in the heavens along with the BEAST over Rome blaspheming the One True God while lying to a billion souls in the Catholic Church that she, as the Virging Mary, will protect them if they continue to worship her. The demon spirit who will give voice to the human false prophet as he proclaims the Anti-Christ God and for all people to make an image of him and worship him. God's Word says, "Thou shalt have no other gods before Me." "Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven images...to bow down to them and to worship them, it is an abomination." "Call no man you Father on earth, for you have one Father and that is your Father in Heaven." "There is one mediator between God and man and that is the man Christ Jesus." So as you can see in this movie, Emily Rose died because she was dealing with people who worship Satan under the facade of Christianity. Satan does not care which of the many deceptions he uses to get your soul into a devil's burning hell, Satan hates you, but Jesus willingly gave His life's blood to pay your entrance into Heaven. We are in the last days, please repent of your sins and Jesus will save you and protect you from the terrible judgments soon to fall on the earth in rapid succession.
