Overview

Miramax Films darlings Robert Rodriguez and screenwriter Kevin Williamson teamed up for a high-school alien-horror film that they described as The Breakfast Club meets Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Dilapidated Herrington High is the location for a story about a school faculty taken over by outer-space creatures, forcing the students to take charge and kick some alien butt. School faculty members Robert Patrick, Bebe Neuwirth, Salma Hayek, and Jon Stewart are infested with rapidly reproducing space worms that ...

Dilapidated Herrington High is the location for a story about a school faculty taken over by outer-space creatures, forcing the students to take charge and kick some alien butt. School faculty members Robert Patrick, Bebe Neuwirth, Salma Hayek, and Jon Stewart are infested with rapidly reproducing space worms that take over their minds and bodies. But never fear, because at this school, between hazing the student body and having sex in the locker room, a Scooby-Doo-ish group of high school students is ready to fight back. The up-and-coming acting talent includes R&B singer Usher Raymond, Elijah Wood, Clea DuVall, Josh Hartnett, Shawn Hatosy, Laura Harris, and Jordanna Brewster. The story is nearly irrelevant, as the real stars are the action and lots of special effects.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide
Essentially an attempt to do for the science-fiction/thriller genre what the author had done for the slasher film with 1996's Scream, Kevin Williamson's The Faculty raised the question of where to draw the line between homage and theft. Lifting its plot directly from Jack Finney's The Body Snatchers and the films it inspired, The Faculty ostensibly gets itself off the hook by mentioning Finney's story in the film itself. Was it post-modernism or plagiarism? Regardless, with The Faculty, Williamson and director Robert Rodriguez craft a tight, suspenseful, consistently entertaining (up to a ludicrous finale), and subversive thriller. It's this last quality that most reviews at the time seemed to overlook. The Body Snatchers formula makes a natural fit for the film's conformity-mad high school setting and Williamson and Rodriguez make the most of pitting a band of outsiders, however photogenic and stylishly clad, against the personality-sapping forces of evil. Buried within you'll also find a not-particularly-subtle pro-drug message, an unusually unwholesome element which is at least at odds with the squeaky-clean images of high school put forth by the era's wave of teen films (She's All That, et al.).

    the faculty

in my teens caught this on tv and it was pretty good. this was way before wood's hobbit movie, hartnett's hawk down movie. basically about students being weird and supposed aliens. a classic to look back upon. clea was cool and josh was cute. i'm surprised halloween h20 was his movie debut. elijah was adorable thank you once again fearnet on demand. its one of those movies where you want to be a part of that group or something like a fantasy action movie but this is scifi...and horror which has its moments.

    Great!

The main reason I rented this movie is because Elijah Wood is in it (that and a friend recommended it). I thought it was great though! I would definitely buy this movie.

    Oh yea!

When I rented this movie,I was planning on watching it becuase Josh Hartnett and Elijah Wood were in it(I trust their work).I thought the plot was pretty cool, even if I thought it reminded me of a 1950's horror flick. While I was watching it,I realized this movie was better than I thought it would be.I loved the mix of the clashing characters:the badass(but really smart),the stuck-up snob, the loner goth, the geeky photographer, the new girl and the star jock. This movie was gr8!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Better than...

This is not a good movie despite what the customers have said. In fact,it is laughable. I watched this movie after being told that it was one of the best horror/sci-fi films made recently... well it wasn't. The plot was predictable and melodramatic. The main characters were stereotypes and completely unlikable(except Elijah Wood's role). In addition the effects weren't that great. Many times the ''scary'' parts of the movie caused me to laugh outloud.

    Another of Elijah's great films!

Even though it wasn't really the best horror movies of all time, the plot and the characters really make the movie a ''must see.'' I recommend this movie to anyone who wants to see Elijah Wood in another great movie.

    Totally hott!

The Faculty is one of the best horror/sci-fi film I have seen, the first time I saw it I fell in love the movie. Josh Hartnett is totally hott in this movie, so if your a fan of his I recomend you see this film. The ending is great and the plot is terrific, even though the story is in a completely messed up highschool with very different characters who wouldn't give the time of day to eachother, they all seem to come together and everyone is happy in the end.

    Different

The Faculty is a different sci-fi modern horror that truely catches an original sense to alien horror. The movie takes place in a high school and has the plot of six totally different students uniting as a group to battle off the teachers of their high school who turn out to be aliens. The Faculty is funny, and original. The language is extreme and often exaggerated in some scenes. The violence is heavy with several people being hurt, and some killed. There's no sex, however, a nude woman is seen walking for a lengthy period of time. If you're over the age of 18, I highly reccommend this movie, especially if you want to see a great cast in action.

    Totally Great

I'm a chicken by nature. I can't go on rollar coasters, I don't watch horror movies, sci fi's or anything else that's scary. Then I fell in love with Elijah Wood so I watched The Faculty. I loved it! The Faculty totally brought me out of my shell. The special effects, the script, the actors and actresses. Everything was perfect. This is the ultimate movie in horror and sci fi flicks. It's too bad most people don't know about it.

    A great movie!

This movie is great. Even though it's supposed to be frightening, I find it funny. Elijah Wood does a spectacular performance as Casey Conner.

    The best movie ever made....

The Faculty transports the viewer to a High School that is incredibly believeable. Josh Hartnett plays the signature ''failing druggie''; Jordanna playing the ''beautiful cheerleader''; Clea plays the signature ''goth''; Laura is the weird ''new girl''; Shawn plays the ''not-so-bright football player''; and Elijah plays the ''hopeless nerd'' that we all know so well. When you see these six in a regular high school setting, you know that they would never even give one another a second glance. But when the aliens invade their school, they realize that their the only ones left who can save the world. They are forced to work together, and when they do, they find out that the others arent as bad as they thought. With a major twist right at the end, this movie ends with a loud bang. I highly suggest this movie to everyone.
