Good and evil battle for the future of 23rd century Earth in this visually striking big-budget science fiction epic. In the movie's prologue, which is set in 1914, scientists gather in Egypt at the site of an event that transpired centuries earlier. Aliens, it seemed, arrived to collect four stones representing the four basic elements (earth, air, fire and water) - warning their human contacts that the objects were no longer safe on Earth. A few hundred years later (in the 23rd century), a huge ball of molten lava and flame is hurtling toward Earth, and scientist-holy man Victor Cornelius (Ian Holm) declares that in order to prevent it from destroying the planet, the same four elemental stones must be combined with the fifth element, as embodied by a visitor from another world named Leeloo (Milla Jovovich). However, if the force of evil presents itself to the stones instead, the Earth will be destroyed, and an evil being named Zorg (Gary Oldman) will trigger the disaster. Despite her remarkable powers, Leeloo needs help with her mission, and she chooses her accomplice, military leader-turned-cab driver Korben Dallas (Bruce Willis), when she literally falls through the roof of his taxi. Writer and director Luc Besson began writing the script for The Fifth Element when he was only 16 years old, though he was 38 before he was able to bring it to the screen.

awesome movie! great visuals & the acting is phenominal! i've seen this movie more than a dozen times and enjoy every single second of it. you can watch it over & over & discover something new going on in the background. every bit of detail begs to be noticed. pick up the Ultimate version today!
What a roller-coaster ride! There's an interesting use of color, costumes, techno-gadgets and background scenery but what really drives this movie is great acting and a great script (i.e., great dialogue). There's so much flippant, tongue-in-cheek humor - even in the midst of intense, lengthy action scenes - and the music's pretty good too. Gary Oldman and Bruce Willis were awesome as the respective villain and hero, but Chris Tucker's performance as the womanizing, smooth-talking, loudmouth showman takes his usual role to an entirely new and unforgettable level. A must-see for all fans of sci-fi, action and comedy.
I bought this video despite Bruce and quickly found that he is a key ingredient for why this video works. Milla is fantastic - what an actress! So many great performances melded into an excellent film which has already passed the test of time in our home.
I can honestly say that I have yet to see another movie that even remotely resembles this one. The soundtrack is glitchy beat driven and generally over the top [operatic vocoder synth opera? sign me up]. The costuming is perfect. Some people took qualms with this choice or that, but I think the casting is absolutely spot on. Bruce Willis updates Harrison Ford's classic Bladerunner stylings justifiably. Gary Oldman reminds us that he can be an absurdly convincing, stylish villian. Mila Jovovich holds up surprisingly well, and certainly looks the part well enough that any doofy sci-fi kid like myself could enjoy the movie based on her aesthetical addition alone. Chris Tucker is side splitting. I could go on and on. This movie is totally insane, but easily backs it up with inventive, witty dialogue and great actors given the freedom to play the parts properly. Do yourself a favor and atleast give it a trial rent.
I'm not a big SCI-FI movie fan, but this movie is not your normal Sci-fi movie. The first time I saw the movie, I was just surfing the channels and this movie " knocked me out ". Now I try to catch it every time it's on and will DEFINITELY buy this movie for my collection.
This movie is awesome! The casting of this film is odd, but good. The President is an actor that is normally a thug and his general is a bad guy most of the time in other movies. The story is complex but it blew me away!!! I recommened you buy it, or at least rent it...RIGHT NOW!! stop reading and go get it...NOW!!!
This fun spoof laden flick is a must see for anyone who likes campy scifi films. The Mangalores are just ignorant soldiers of fortune who work for Zorg who is the agent of the evil forces, and is attempting to get the stones for the Evil whatever it is that is out to destroy the Earth. This is a must see fun action film that is loaded with tongue in cheek humor that has to be seen to be enjoyed.
This is one of my personal favorite sc-fi movis.
The Fifth Element is not a movie to be taken seriously, but that is certainly not a bad thing. It is a movie that is just plain fun. It is rather over-the-top in a lot of ways but that is its charm. Well worth watching when you want a wild ride through an impossible future. The special effects are great and the humor ranges from tongue-in-cheek to outrageous.
When I went to see this movie in the theatre I was a little disappointed. I like sci-fi so I decided to buy the DVD anyway. I have to say after repeated viewing this movie is actually very good. Bruce's movies are almost always good and he rarely let's me down. This man is a true action hero and at the end of a movie he always gets as much of a beating as he gives. The high bit version is highly recommended and the picture and sound are superb. The art direction and costumes are amazing in this wondrously odd, strange sci-fi flick
