Overview

This could very well be the most unexpected special edition of 2005. 20th Century Fox has truly pulled out all the stops here to make this special edition an ideal companion piece with their recent special edition of the 1986 version of The Fly. The first disc includes a handsome transfer of The Fly 2; it boasts a new high-definition, anamorphic widescreen transfer that captures the film's shadowy look to nice effect and an effective set of Dolby 5.1 and DTS stereo options. Also on the first disc is a commentary track with director Chris Walas and genre expert Bob Burns; it's fairly lightweight but does offer some good behind-the-scenes story and a winning sense of enthusiasm for the film. Rounding out the first disc is a pair of deleted scenes that were cut after previews. Seeing them will leave no doubt as to why they were cut, but they're interesting to see nonetheless. Extra-wise, things get even better on the second disc. First up, is a pair of documentaries: "Transformations" offers a thorough overview of The Fly 2's genesis and "The Fly Papers" is an excellent documentary that covers the history of all five Fly films produced by 20th Century Fox. Other featurettes on the disc include the original EPK for The Fly 2, a comprehensive series of the behind-the-scenes clips that illustrate the creation of the film's various special effects, and an enlightening chat with composer Christopher Young that covers his approach to scoring The Fly 2. Fans will also be pleased with a series of three storyboard-to-film comparisons that feature commentary with Walas. Rounding out the disc is a trailer collection plus elaborate galleries of promotional materials, conceptual art, and stills. In short, this is a better package of material than even the film's fans could have expected, and 20th Century Fox deserves praise for going the extra mile.

All Movie Guide
Does The Fly 2 live up to the high level of inspiration and craftsmanship displayed in the 1986 version of The Fly? No. The Fly 2 has some undeniable flaws: it's about ten minutes too long for a film with such a simple storyline and, with the exception of Bartok, all of Martin's tormentors are one-dimensional caricatures. However, it's not really fair to judge it by such standards. The Fly 2 is essentially a late '80s update of the 1950s teen-oriented monster-movie formula. The script, whose final drafts were penned by a young Frank Darabont, approaches the process of Martin's mutation with imagination and sympathy. It also works in some anticorporate sentiments that were unexpectedly subversive for the time. FX artist-turned-director Chris Walas isn't the master stylist that Cronenberg is, but he handles the material with gusto (especially in the numerous effects-oriented scenes) and thankfully bypasses any overt campiness in his approach to the film. Best of all, The Fly 2 has a fantastic lead cast: Eric Stoltz underplays his tormented hero role nicely, Daphne Zuniga makes a genuinely appealing love interest, and Lee Richardson makes his villainous role mysterious and menacing in a subtle way. In short, The Fly 2 isn't the best of the horror sequels, but it works nicely on a programmer-status level.
