The Forgotten

Overview

The Julianne Moore sci-fi melodrama The Forgotten comes to DVD in a fairly packed version thanks to Columbia TriStar. Included are two versions of the film, the theatrical version and an extended cut that features two deleted scenes and an alternate ending. Comparing two alternate cuts of a film is always an interesting exercise, especially when the movie was given such a lukewarm reaction upon its release. What the extended cut adds is a bit more genuine mystery and a nice emotional beat for its two stars. ...

Additionally, the alternate ending doesn't quite take the scary road that the theatrical cut did, but it does deliver a more solid ending that doesn't feel quite as forced as the latter. Thankfully, the disc's producers have included a commentary from the director Joseph Ruben and the writer Gerald Di Pego, whose track covers everything from the inspiration for the script all the way through the story behind the reshot ending. The deleted scenes are available as a separate option and are indeed worth checking out (especially the Anthony Edwards part -- spooky!). A 20-minute making-of also sheds more light on the production, the most interesting of which concerns many of the film's shocking moments, which are detailed here by the talented FX staff. A behind-the-scenes featurette has been supplied as well, with interviews from the actors as well as on-set footage in the New York City shoot. Finally, both the teaser and theatrical previews can be found in the trailers section, along with trailers for other Sony DVDs and theatrical releases. The Forgotten has been given a stellar 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer with separate English, French, and Thai 5.1 Dolby Digital tracks to highlight the image. Well worth taking a look at for fans of the film or anyone else who was tantalized by the fine trailer.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Jeremy Wheeler
The Forgotten is a film that will no doubt be forgotten in time, though that doesn't mean that it is void of any merit. Sure, the script isn't the shiniest rock in the bucket, and the initial setup of Julianne Moore continually flipping out is just not handled well at all, on her side or the director's -- that said, the movie still has a few wow moments that might just be worth a viewing with a big bowl of popcorn. If you've seen the trailer, then you know just what kind of scenes are being referred to here. Thankfully, the movie still has a few more up its sleeve that you will not expect or be prepared for. Sadly, the supporting "name" actors are severely underused, and the movie ends with a handbag full of questions unanswered. With all of that, plus an ending that seems a little too forced in comparison to the rest of the film, The Forgotten will still live on for the moments where it does shine. It's not perfect, nor too exceptional outside of its few good scares, but sometimes that's all you need. Don't go in expecting much and you'll be pleasantly surprised at what spooks you may get out of it.
Boston Globe - Ty Burr
Turns out to be a grade-A B-movie that grounds its thrills in particulars of time, place, and character, so that when the time comes to make the leap into the wholly preposterous, we do so willingly. This is a movie that earns our trust -- and then happily abuses it.
Baltimore Sun - Chris Kaltenbach
This is a movie that earns its suspense and validates its emotions, especially its examination of the bond between mother and child.
Seattle Post-Intelligencer - William Arnold
It struck me as the most exciting and original Hollywood thriller, occult or otherwise, since The Sixth Sense.

This is a movie that earns its suspense and validates its emotions, especially its examination of the bond between mother and child.

    The Remembered

The Forgotten was an excellent movie! I could watch it every day.Telly did not forget at all about her little Sam.That showed true love.It surprised me to find out WHAT was the cause of it all.I was on her side all the way.She wasn't crazy. She knew something was not right. The Forgotten makes me wonder will that ever really happen. Will THEY run some sort of experiment to test us? And now, when I forget something,I get the feeling that it might be happening to me! This movie really does make me think...and wonder. But one thing that I won't forget is how good of a movie this was!

    What was this?

This movie held my attention, that is until the secret is disclosed near the end, then this movie becomes very lame and disappointing. What a letdown. I hate movies with terrible, unoriginal, uninspired endings like this.

A classic thriller in the tradition of 'The Butterfly Effect'

This is one of the best thrillers of 2004. Julianne Moore's best movie yet. I would highly recommend this movie to anyone.
