Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
The Fox and the Hound 2 is not a "next generation" sequel like The Little Mermaid 2: Return to the Sea, but more a mid-quel, like Bambi II. The story returns Copper, the hound dog, and Tod, the fox, to the carefree days of their youth, before that whole nature vs. nurture thing threatened their friendship. Copper is being trained to be a hunting dog, but so far, he's only good at getting into trouble. A visit to the county fair reveals his hidden talent: singing! Cash Patrick Swayze, the leader of the Singing Strays, wants Copper to get into the act after the group's lead singer, "diva dog" Trixie Reba McEntire, quits. Will success spoil Copper and end his friendship with Tod on a sour note? Will Tod and Trixie team up to try and break up the act? Disney's produced-for-video sequels to its animation features are by now a genre in themselves. As with its predecessors, The Fox and the Hound 2 is geared toward younger children. There are no towering, crimson-eyed bears to terrorize them as in the first film. Instead, it's a simple story of friendship, told without gratuitous pop-culture references and scant rude humor there's one passing gas joke at the minute mark, and one character has a penchant for belching. The clever animation is a mix of traditional cel and CGI, and the animal characters are loaded with personality in the classic Disney tradition. The country and bluegrass soundtrack, too, is a real treat, with contributions by McEntire and Trisha Yearwood. For High School Musical fans, Lucas "Ryan" Grabeel sings the end-credit song. As far as these Disney sequels go, The Fox and the Hound 2 is the pick of the litter.
