Don Knotts definitively demonstrates that "calm and murder" don't go together in this 1966 comedy, which, along with The Incredible Mr. Limpet, ranks as his best. Certainly, of all his films it is the one most fondly remembered by baby boomers. Knotts is in peak pipsqueak form as small-town "boob" Luther Heggs, the put-upon typesetter at a small-town newspaper, who yearns to be a reporter. But to get a front-page byline, he must spend the night at the local "murder house," the scene of a grisly, unsolved crime that took place 20 years before. Knotts is at his bug-eyed best as he navigates the house's various terrors. When his incredible reports of ghostly organ music and a bloodstained portrait are discredited by the scheming heir who wants to demolish his family's infamous abode, Luther rises to the occasion, solves the mystery, and even gets the pretty girlfriend (Joan Staley, the November 1958 Playboy Playmate of the Month!) of his taunting rival. Look early on for Hal Smith, who played Otis the town drunk on The Andy Griffith Show. And if the home looks eerily familiar, there is a reason why: It was the stabbing grounds of Norman Bates in Psycho. Talk of murder-suicide may be inappropriate for younger viewers, who might quake along with Luther, but older kids should scream with laughter.

    Smack that idiot who just claimed carrey needed to redo this one!!

    What an INSULT to DON KNOTTS! I WORE OUT my VHS version of this one and have been impatiently awaiting the DVD version !!!! Hooray!! This is a GREAT movie and gee, your kids can watch it over and over again and never get tired of it. They also will not come away with any new disgusting habits or noises.

    Genius at Work

    Don Knotts came to national prominence on the Andy Griffith show as Deputy Barney Fife. Griffith told Knotts that he did not believe he would do more than a few years of the show so Knotts made a movie deal. Griffith stayed with the show without telling Knotts he was doing so and Knotts left one of the most successful series on television at the height of its popularity. Depending on how you look at it that was either the best move he ever made or the worst.

    In my opinion The Ghost and Mr. Chicken was perhaps the best of the seven films from that time done by Knotts. A bumbling newsman is sure that the local mansion is haunted and he tries to convince the town he isn't crazy. Of course, being as neurotic as he was nobody believes him. Is the house haunted or isn't it. You'll have to decide. It is wonderful escape film and fun for everyone.

    Classic

    I remember first viewing this movie as a child. I thought this was one of the funniest movies Don Knotts ever made. As an adult, I still get a kick out of watching this film.

    They don't make them like this anymore.

    I was a young kid when this I first saw this classic and I was sure I was too cool to be caught off guard laughing out loud at an 'old' movie. I still have the casette tape I recorded of the movie while watching it. I now crack up listening to myself laugh my a*s off. I highly, highly recommend this movie for ALL ages. Don Knotts was a brilliant comedian and the fact he was snubbed for the Oscar that year is one of the greatest injustices in motion picture history.

    love this one!!!

    as a child i saw this movie in the theatre. it is a really fun thing to watch it at home with my kids. such a good old fashioned family film.

    60's Madcap Farce at its Best!

    Put your mind on hold for 90 minutes and enjoy this romp that boasts tremendous character actors and the gorgeous Joan Staley, but which is a vehicle for and is dominated by Don Knotts as the insecure Luther Heggs. The plot is obvious, but who cares? The movie has great tag lines (''Karo, Karo, Salome'', ''...and they used Bon Ami'')and wears well, even today! Atta boy, Luther! Thank you very much!

    Don Knotts cannot be improved upon

    Jim Carey, even in his brilliance cannot touch Don Knotts' comic genius in this film. Don's expressions alone should garner him the best character representation of Luther Heggs ever. You can't improve upon what's already perfect. I can't wait for DVD release.

    Jim Carrey should remake this.

    The small midwestern town vibe of the 60's is portrayed perfectly. A place slightly hipper than Mayberry. Don Knotts gives a virtouso performance in this highly entertaining spooky-comedy. Great characters and wonderfully creepy organ music.
