Overview

A young man living in a future where complacency is valued above all else discovers the sinister secrets that hold his fragile society together after being selected to become the Receiver of Memory in this adaptation of author Lois Lowry's Newbery Medal-winning young-adult novel. Jonas (Brenton Thwaites) was raised to believe that conformity is the key to contentment. The society Jonas lives in is a peaceful one, in large part because their collective memories have been entrusted to the Giver (Jeff Bridges). A mysterious yet seemingly benevolent figure, the Giver is the sole guardian of the community's dark and hidden history. When that history is revealed to Jonas over the course of his illuminating sessions with the Giver, the young man learns that the wisdom he now holds could dictate the fate of the entire society. Later, as the weight of that responsibility becomes too great a burden for Jonas to bear, he realizes that his only hope of saving the ones he loves most is to flee. Unfortunately for Jonas and perhaps his entire world, every previous attempt to escape has ended in failure. Meryl Streep, Alexander Skarsgård, and Katie Holmes star in a film from director Phillip Noyce (Rabbit-Proof Fence, The Quiet American).

I always think the worst about movies that are based on books. I had zero expectations for "The Giver". Though I tried to prepare myself for the inevitable butchering of the book. It has been many years since I read "The Giver" so I can't do a scene by scene comparison of movie vs book. But several days after watching "The Giver" I'm as giddy as a teenager at a One Direction concert. I'll try to use precise language to describe how I feel. I "enjoy" The Giver movie and I am "proud" of The Giver. (movie reference :D) I'm still smiling and feeling all warm inside! They truly captured the spirit of the book and characters. I want a sequel but yet I don't. But I do. I could kiss the folks at Walden Media. They always do justice to the books that they make into movies. Every filmmaker should take note and grant the same honor to books that hit the big screen.

The critics didn't care for this adaption. They are probably the ones that misunderstood the book. I thought it was handled well here. Casting was spot on other than maybe Meryl. She's amazing but this was not her type of platform. The story stood close to the book other than the advanced age thing. Enjoyed this telling of one of my favorite books.
