Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Andrew Farach-Colton
Decca's Ring cycle, with Sir Georg Solti and the Vienna Philharmonic, is universally acclaimed as one of the greatest opera recordings of all time. And the reason for this has as much to do with the genius of its producer, John Culshaw, as with the extraordinary collective talent of the singers, orchestra, and conductor. This documentary was made by the BBC in 1965, during the recording of Götterdämmerung, the final installment of the tetralogy, allowing us to see how it was done. Culshaw produced the recording with the same painstaking attention to detail as a conscientious stage director, and the result brought this massive work vividly to life for listeners, many of whom never had the opportunity to experience Wagner's magnum opus in the opera house. To watch it being made now is to look back on a lost age: No record company today would deign to lavish such care -- and financial resources -- on a single project. For example, Culshaw had the steerhorns Wagner specifies specially made; even great opera houses cut corners here and rely on trombones. There are brief interview segments with Solti, Culshaw, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, and various members of the recording team, as well as large segments filmed during the recording itself. Rehearsals were as intense as the final takes, thanks largely to Solti's kinetic presence, and it makes one want to rush to a CD player and dive right into the drama. In addition to the video portion of the DVD, Decca has remastered 69 minutes of excerpts from the complete Ring, recording in Dolby digital 5.1 Surround Sound -- an audiophile thrill. For Wagnerians and record buffs alike, The Golden Ring is a priceless document.
