Leonard Maltin wasn't alone when he noticed similarities between Goonies and the 1934 Our Gang comedy Mama's Little Pirate. Adapted by Chris Columbus from a story by Steven Spielberg, the film follows a group of misfit kids (including such second-generation Hollywoodites as Josh Brolin and Sean Astin) as they search for buried treasure in a subterranean cavern. Here they cross the path of lady criminal Mama Fratelli (Anne Ramsey) and her outlaw brood. Fortunately, the kids manage to befriend Fratelli's hideously deformed (but soft-hearted) son (John Matuszak), who comes to their rescue. The Spielberg influence is most pronounced in the film's prologue and epilogue, when the viewer is advised that the film's real villains are a group of "Evil Land Developers." The musical score makes excellent use of Max Steiner's main theme from The Adventures of Don Juan, not to mention contributions by the likes of Richard Marx and Cyndi Lauper.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Adam Goldberg
For many moviegoers, The Goonies epitomizes the '80s family action-adventure. Steven Spielberg assumes the reins as producer in this big-budget effort, enlisting seasoned action-director Richard Donner (Superman) to direct and blossoming screenwriter Chris Columbus (Gremlins) to pen the script. This able trio certainly understands what young audiences want to see, thus fill their narrative with special effects, pirate's treasure, epic sets, and curmudgeonly crooks. The result is a mélange of memorable moments equally thrilling for both adults and children. From the opening jailbreak scene to the wild water slide ride through one-eyed Willie's booby-trapped caverns, this is a relentless, high-octane "Spielbergian" journey starring young protagonists. Although the characters are built on obvious clichés (i.e. the whining fat kid, the homecoming queen, the Asian kid with gadgets), the charming performances and quirky dialogue manage to bring these seemingly stale archetypes to life. This is a film that never talks down to its young audience, creating intelligent teen characters that feel real emotions and face internal and external conflict from all sides. While many consider this film nothing more than a busy and overproduced grab bag of Hollywood hack, others can look back on The Goonies nostalgically. Sloth's drooling shrieks of "BABY RUTH" and "HEY YOU GUYS" may seem a tad trite and corny by today's standards, but these moments are as famous as any other '80s celluloid classics. A string of unimpressive children's adventures such as Russkies would soon follow the release of The Goonies, but the canned plot lines and cardboard characters lacked the heart of Mikey, Mouth, Data, and their colorful cohorts.

Words cannot even express how much I have always loved this movie. I have been watching this movie since I was a kid, and it is without a doubt one of my absolute favorite movies of all time! I have never gotten tired of this movie. It's a fun adventure with some great comical moments in it. And Sloth, great! "Heeeeeeey yooouuu guuuuuys!" LoL, love it! If you have never seen this movie, then are missing out! I look forward to upgrading this to the special 25th anniversary blue ray edition soon! XD Long live the classics!

One of my favorite quotes from the movie and scene where the kids don't want to continue the search for the treasure at first, then Mikey convinces them they should. Love this movie ever since I first saw it on TV. A group of kids: Mikey, Brandon, Steph, Mouth, Andy, Data and Chunk set out to find treasure from a treasure map they find. But they're not the only ones who're looking for the treasure as well. Liked the story and there were some pretty good acting by the main characters. There were some hilarious and emotional moments. Who doesn't remember Chunk and the truffle shuffle? Wish more movies were like this. One of the better adventure movies, for kids anyway. Great ending to a great classic, for new and old fans. Love live the Goonies!

This movie is an all time classic for children who grew up in the 80's. Children love this movie for its adventure and become captured in its storyline. The characters in the movie and entertaining and are just normal kids searching for buried treasure. Children who grew up seeing this movie would most likely never stop loving it.

This movie is one of my all time favorites! It's one of ''the'' ultimate 1980's movies! There is no one who doesn't like this movie!

It's a classic! This highly-recommended movie was made back when Hollywood still knew how to make great films. It has everything for everyone -- action, adventure, romance, comedy. You know you can't go wrong when a film is directed by Richard Donner, and has the influence and producing/writing touch of Steven Spielberg. It's one of my all time favorites. Highly recommended to everyone --especially families. Mom's and Dad's don't have to worry about the content, and the storyline will hold the kids' attention span easily. A must-have for all video collections.

This is definetly a movie that everyone should see. The characters make the movie so much better. I have watched this movie at least 20 + times. I just can't get enough! If anyone is debating on a good movie to go and see THE GOONIES is definetly it. This movie should be passed down from generation to generation.

This is easily my favorite movie. With an exceptional cast, adventurous storyline, and great script, this movie will never age. The DVD is exceptional with deleted scenes and a commentary featuring the entire cast. This movie makes one think back to the days of childhood playtime and brings it to life. These kids are teenagers who can appriciate an adventure just as well as a kid which makes the audience intruiged which makes for a timeless movie.
