The titular hero is Basil, a Holmes-like rodent complete with deerstalker who solves crimes in the company of his friend and chronicler Dr. Dawson. Basil and Dawson are retained by the daughter of a mouse toymaker who has been kidnapped by the diabolical Ratigan. The villain hopes to force the toymaker to construct a fake version of the queen who will grant power to the bad guy--or at least, for that part of the world behind the walls of London. Though nearly eliminated by Ratigan, Basil and Dawson trap the villain in the fast-moving mechanisms of Big Ben. By relying on computer animation, Disney was able to keep the budget of Great Mouse Detective down to a manageable size, thus earning back the losses incurred by the studio's previous cartoon feature, The Black Cauldron. Among the talented voice actors utilized in The Great Mouse Detective is Vincent Price, who plays guess what part? Hint: he ain't Basil.

One of Disney's best animated features of the 1980s, The Great Mouse Detective is based on Eve Titus's book Basil of Baker Street, about a Victorian-era rodent of Holmesian (as in Sherlock) cunning. When a toymaker (voiced by Mr. Ed's Alan Young) is kidnapped, his daughter enlists the deerstalker-topped rodent to solve the case. The legendary Vincent Price supplies the voice for one of Disney's most memorable villains, the aptly named Ratigan, or as he refers to himself in song, "The World's Greatest Criminal Mind." With its ambitious use of computer animation, Mouse Detective helped to usher in a new age of Disney animation. The film's thrilling set piece is a climactic confrontation inside the turning gears and cogs of London's Big Ben. The film was co-directed by Ron Clements and John Musker, who would later collaborate on The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Hercules, and Treasure Planet. Will children sit for this film's more old-fashioned pleasures? It's elementary!

Coming on the heels of the disappointing The Black Cauldron, The Great Mouse Detective marked a welcome, if unexceptional, return to form for the Disney studio. Mouse is a modest and unassuming entertainment with wonderful parts that somehow add up to a slightly lesser whole. The animation is clean and solid, flowing smoothly yet with energy and featuring convincing and effective character design. Backgrounds are colorful and atmospheric, and there are a number of clever and amusing inventions, including a Rube Goldberg-esque deathtrap for Basil. The plot is strong, with the genre's requisite twists and turns (although not so many as to confuse younger viewers), and the film moves along at a lively clip. Vincent Price makes his cartoon debut, supplying the oiliness and slithering vocal tones the role requires. Barrie Ingham and Val Bettin are just right as Basil and Dawson, and Melissa Manchester puts in a pleasing music hall turn. The abbreviated score is only so-so, although Ratigan's big number is well staged. Despite all these assets, the film still lacks that little extra spark; fortunately directors Ron Clements and John Musker would find that spark (in a big way) with their next effort, The Little Mermaid.

    Fantastic, beginning to end.

    I saw this film for the first time in the theaters with my father when I was about five years old, and I am as entranced watching it now at twenty-seven as I was then. This movie is what used to have us lining up for Disney back when we were kids- a film with lovable characters, a solid and engrossing plot, and most importantly a great story that the audience cannot help but be drawn into. It is, without a doubt, a much-unappreciated Disney great.

    Great Movie!

    I saw this movie every time i stayed at my grandmother's house when I was a child. I don't remember how old i was, but i'm 23 and i STILL love it! Great classic! They don't make Disney movies like they used to anymore.

    The Best Disney Movie Ever!!

    I loved this movie when I was younger and I still love it. In my opinion it is the best Disney movie. It was funny and entertaining and had the one of the best songs from a Disney movie ever. I still watch this movie now with my cousins.

    God I Love This Movie!

    16-years-old and I still laugh at Basil's 'Whatever.' to Olivia's last name.I thought he was so cute when I was little,I actually had a crush on him. Sad,I know. Ah,nothing can beat them old Disney classics,before they started making them 'politically correct.'The old ones are hilarious,for some reason. Definatly buy this movie,it's downright funny and because today's my (duh!) 16th birthday.XD
