The Great Race

Overview

Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis are bitter rivals in director Blake Edwards' hilarious road comedy The Great Race. Warner's work on this 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer is stunning. With rich textures and dark black levels, this transfer appears to be a stunningly great reproduction of the original print. While a few slight instances of dirt and edge enhancement abound, overall this is a very pleasing image that will surely please fans. The soundtrack is presented in a newly remixed Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround mix in English. While the film's age means a lack of directional effects, overall this new soundtrack is a very welcome addition to the disc. No excessive distortion or hiss is heard in any of the dialogue, music, or effects. Also included on this disc is a French Dolby Mono soundtrack, as well as Spanish, English, French, Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Thai, and Portuguese subtitles. The extra features on The Great Race are small but entertaining -- included on this disc is a very funny and strange "behind-the-scenes" documentary from the 1960s (which features a hearty voice-over actor commenting on what's going on), some cast and crew highlights, and an anamorphic widescreen theatrical trailer for the film.

    A Thrill full of Laughs

This movie is another hilarious comedy by the creator of the Pink Panther franchise; Blake Edwards. Putting the talents of Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, Natalie Wodd and Peter Falk is sure to make you roar with laughter each time you watch it.

    more from this reviewer

Edwards' epic salute to the great comedy classics sports a fine cast, witty script, and the expected comedy set-pieces suitable for the whole family.

Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon (reteamed after Some Like It Hot) play it broad, fast and loose in this Black Edwards epic comedy. With an irresistible Natalie Wood as the girl reporter following their global motorcar race, this lengthy comedy tests endurance at times, but pays off in the end. Edwards has ample opportunity to show indulge in his visual comedy, his off-camera punchlines, and comic set pieces which have never been equalled. Spectacular wide-screen cinematogaphy, delightful Henry Mancini score, and first-rate support from Keenan Wynn, Arhtur O'Connell, Ross Martin and Vivian Vance all combine to make this a solid hit.

    My Favorite All-Time Movie

''The Great Race'' - This has been my favorite movie for the last 16 years! There is so much slapstick humor in this movie that you have to pay attention or you might miss it. Jack Lemmon is a genious! I don't know how this cast held a straight face while filming!

Great slapstick in the Great Race

This has to be one of my favorite movies of all time. The cast is wonderful and working together, pull off this movie superbly. Jack Lemmon as the demented Professor Fate and his sidekick Max (Peter Falk) , do their best to derail anyone who gets in their way, Especially the Great Leslie, played by Tony Curtis. Natalie Woods is a reporter who covers the race and is also an entrant. Although a bit long near the end this movie is one worth watching. One I consider an unsung comedy classic.

    Greatest Comedy Ever

One of the greatest comedies ever made. Jack Lemmon is superb and even after seeing the movie more than six times, I roll over in laughter. Superb.

Too much fun! Jack Lemmon and Peter Falk are the bumbling, funn

Too much fun! Jack Lemmon and Peter Falk are the bumbling, funny villians. Tony Curtis is the dashing in white hero and Natalie Wood is the heroine! Best pie fight in film, and full of stars in cameo roles with tongue in cheek salutes to some older movies, this is a most enjoyable film! "Push the buttom, Max!"

Great Race DVD a must for Great Race fans.

The Great Race on DVD brings out the color and clarity of one of the funniest movies ever made. It is unfortunate that the soundtrack for the opening credits is out of sync for the english part of the DVD (the audience boos at the Great Leslie and applauds Prof. Fate). If you watch the french part of the DVD opening credits soundtrack is in sync. The opening credits are also missing the original first 13 seconds of the film which showed the film ''leader'' (this confused many a projectionist when the film was first released, to see the first reel with two ''leaders''. This must have also confused the technicians when they burned the master DVD). If these flaws were corrected, I would rate this DVD 5 stars.
