The fact that Ali can't act his way out of a wet paper bag is hardly important; audiences came to see their hero in action in the boxing ring, and they weren't disappointed. The rambling, episodic screenplay covers Ali's life from his "Cassius Clay" days to the celebrated Ali/George Foreman bout. It is hard to deny that Muhammad Ali is well cast as "himself" in this colorful biopic. An inordinate amount of screen time is given over to Ali's conversion to Islam and his potentially career-breaking decision not to serve in the Army. Ernest Borgnine does his usual as Ali's first trainer Angelo Dundee, while Roger E. Mosley, cast as Sonny Liston, exhibits more star power than the real Liston and Ali combined! The Greatest was the final directorial effort from the late Tom Gries.
