Director Frank Darabont, who made an acclaimed feature film debut with The Shawshank Redemption (1994), based on a Stephen King novel set in a prison, returns for a second feature, based on King's 1996 serialized novel set in a prison. In 1935, inmates at the Cold Mountain Correctional Facility call Death Row "The Green Mile" because of the dark green linoleum that tiles the floor. Paul Edgecomb (Tom Hanks) is the head guard on the Green Mile when a new inmate is brought into his custody: John Coffey (Michael Clarke Duncan), convicted of the sadistic murder of two young girls. Despite his size and the fearsome crimes for which he's serving time, Coffey seems to be a kind and well-mannered person who behaves more like an innocent child than a hardened criminal. Soon Edgecomb and two of his fellow guards, Howell (David Morse) and Stanton Barry Pepper), notice something odd about Coffey: he's able to perform what seem to be miracles of healing among his fellow inmates, leading them to wonder just what sort of person he could be, and if he could have committed the crimes with which he was charged. The Green Mile also stars James Cromwell as the warden; Michael Jeter, Sam Rockwell, and Graham Greene as inmates awaiting dates with the electric chair; and Harry Dean Stanton as a clever trustee.

This is a really good movie. Please, also read the book. So much more detail in the book, but the movie is still very very good.
I initially read the book because it was suggested by a co-worker as fantastic. I did read the book first, and then had to see the movie hoping it would be as good. It did not disappoint me. Of course, some of the conversations, etc., were shortened or deleted, but the storyline itself was followed almost to a ''T''. The actors (all of them) did a convincing job of portraying the character that was meant to be portrayed. You actually love, hate, pity, and all of the emotions in between towards each and every character. One of the best movies I have seen in a long, long time and probably for a long time to come. Don't miss this one, you'll only be depriving yourself of one of the best movies of all time. It is destined to become a classic!!
The Green mile was a great movie. It made me laugh it made me cry. I must say I wasn't to pleased with the ending BUT it made sense. This movie is a must see!
The Green Mile is s true heartwrencher. It will make you cry over and over again.
one of the best movies i have ever watched. wanderfull role playing by all the actors. a movie which noone will forget ! great scenes and scenarium ! personally made me search new parts of life !!! once more A GREAT MOVIE !!!
I have seen this movie numerous times and have yet to grasp what exactly makes it so outstanding. Each and every actor in this movie could have won an oscar. It brings the harsh reality of life in a poinient and beatiful setting. Once more this is a phenomenal and truly unforgetable movie!
this movie was great!!!!!!!!!! must see!must buy! i loved it it was a great mix of horror and heart must see!!
This movie is incrediable, emotional, it brings tears and laughter. It will make you feel John Coffey's pain.
Tom Hanks and Clark put on one of the best performances I've seen. This is the only movie that has made me weep like a baby. Any movie that can make you feel the pain of both the guards and the inmates is a definet must see/must buy movie.
''Was your wife pleased?'' ''Several times'' Tom Hanks rocks and everyone's very believable. I can't remember that guy who tried to kill Mr. Jingles, but I hated him. Man, he was baaaaad.
I could not stop the movie just for a second. The story it tells is remarkable. This movie definitely an award for best actors. Any actor that can fake an urinary infection deserves and award. Percy was my favorite!
The best film ever made . I cried non-stop. Can't wait to buy it !
Once again, Tom Hanks shines! And the character, Percy, was totally believable and detestable....he should win an award for his abilities as well. This movie held me spellbound, even the second time around! One of the best ever....a must have!
This movie just moved me throught the whole time it was playing. I thought it was going to be just another boring movie but it was very touching an true. I really loved this movie and the roles that the actors seemed so real.
WHEN I WATCHED THE GREEN MILE I WAS BLOWN AWAY BY HOW WELL PLAYED IT WAS. I FELT APART OF EVERY MOMENT. TOM DID A GRATE JOB AS PORLE EGCOUM.GRATE FILM I GIVE IT *******
This a Wonderful film and the performance from Micheal Clark Duncan as the shy, childlike, 8 foot tall mamoth, deservadly won him the oscar nomination and should have won him the oscar. Tom Hanks is also exellent, A great emotional film.
I can't believe I waited this long to see a movie this moving.I will own this one.
What a movie and a even better novel. Stephen King with his imagination at it's finest! I loved Shawshank Redemption.(my fav till The Green Mile. Tom Hanks and David Morse help give Steve the credit he deserves!
I totally loved this movie. The first time I saw it was in a movie theater, which I don't recommend, though. The first time I laughed, cried, and laughed again...I felt the characters joy and sadness. I find now though that I cry even more since I've seen it a few times....now I know the outcome
the movie differs from the book by starting off at the old poeple retirement home. i loved this movie because it made me understand the book alot better and the book got interesting after watching the movie. Paul edgecomb is a bad butt livin the life at 108 years old although he is sad because all of his loved ones died before him. he witnessed everyone die and he didnt like it. i give the movie a two thumbs up because it is certainly one of the best movies ive ever seen. i even told my mom to watch the movie. one of the best characters there was brutal because he was big and he didnt do anything bad, he was down for whatever paul asked him to do. ofcourse paul wont ask him to do anything bad but he is bad butt for just being down for whatever.i loved the movie, i loved the book and i think im about to go watch it again so peace.
I never read the book for this movie but I did see it on PPV with my mom and stepfather. I really enjoyed this movie. Some parts are really cool, like, when the black dude takes away a bladder problem that Tom Hanks has and when he also brings back another cell mates mouse after he's run over. If you don't understand what I mean, i guess you have to see this to understand. WARNING: The ending is really sad.
A great Stephen King based movie. Great performances, and sad ending. Tom Hanks was good in it too.
