Overview

Director Frank Darabont, who made an acclaimed feature film debut with The Shawshank Redemption 1994, based on a Stephen King novel set in a prison, returns for a second feature, based on King's 1996 serialized novel set in a prison. In 1935, inmates at the Cold Mountain Correctional Facility call Death Row "The Green Mile" because of the dark green linoleum that tiles the floor. Paul Edgecomb Tom Hanks is the head guard on the Green Mile when a new inmate is brought into his custody: John Coffey Michael Clarke Duncan, convicted of the sadistic murder of two young girls. Despite his size and the fearsome crimes for which he's serving time, Coffey seems to be a kind and well-mannered person who behaves more like an innocent child than a hardened criminal. Soon Edgecomb and two of his fellow guards, Howell David Morse and Stanton Barry Pepper, notice something odd about Coffey: he's able to perform what seem to be miracles of healing among his fellow inmates, leading them to wonder just what sort of person he could be, and if he could have committed the crimes with which he was charged. The Green Mile also stars James Cromwell as the warden; Michael Jeter, Sam Rockwell, and Graham Greene as inmates awaiting dates with the electric chair; and Harry Dean Stanton as a clever trustee.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Ed Hulse
Most of this adaptation of Stephen King's bestselling novel unfolds in the death house of a Southern prison -- an unlikely setting for a story that's not only uplifting but, at times, positively ethereal. Tom Hanks, Hollywood's favorite Everyman, is ideally cast as Paul Edgecomb, the death row guard who discovers that condemned murderer John Coffey massive Michael Clarke Duncan can heal the sick with a simple laying on of his huge hands. Justifiably skeptical of Edgecomb's claims, his fellow guards eventually become convinced that the gentle, wrongly convicted Coffey is blessed with divine power. Writer-director Frank Darabont, who also directed the film version of King's other prison story, The Shawshank Redemption, takes ample time to flesh out his characters and build sympathy for the doomed prisoner whose menacing appearance masks an almost childlike innocence. As captivating as it is long, the Academy Award-nominated Green Mile takes viewers on an emotional journey that they won't soon forget.

    Really goooooood movie!

This movie is simply outstanding! I thought that the acting was exceptional. It has an all-star cast including Tom Hanks, Michael Duncan, James Cromwell and many more. They definitely brought the movie to life. It was dramatic from beginning to end but in a very good way. It captivates the viewer to the point they cannot turn away. The viewer experiences numerous emotions throughout the movie from happiness to sadness, anger to relief. There is just an amazing range on the events that happen throughout the movie. You cannot detect what will come up next yet you cannot stop watching to see what actually does happen. It is just an amazing movie all around. I LOVED IT!! Two thumbs up!

    Green Mile is Awesome!!!

I never read the book for this movie but I did see it on PPV with my mom and stepfather. I really enjoyed this movie. Some parts are really cool, like, when the black dude takes away a bladder problem that Tom Hanks has and when he also brings back another cell mates mouse after he's run over. If you don't understand what I mean, i guess you have to see this to understand. WARNING: The ending is really sad.

this computer better not freeze again

the movie differs from the book by starting off at the old poeple retirement home. i loved this movie because it made me understand the book alot better and the book got interesting after watching the movie. Paul edgecomb is a bad butt livin the life at 108 years old although he is sad because all of his loved ones died before him. he witnessed everyone die and he didnt like it. i give the movie a two thumbs up because it is certainly one of the best movies ive ever seen. i even told my mom to watch the movie. one of the best characters there was brutal because he was big and he didnt do anything bad, he was down for whatever paul asked him to do. ofcourse paul wont ask him to do anything bad but he is bad butt for just being down for whatever.i loved the movie, i loved the book and i think im about to go watch it again so peace.

    LaughCryLaugh

I totally loved this movie. The first time I saw it was in a movie theater, which I don't recommend, though. The first time I laughed, cried, and laughed again...I felt the characters joy and sadness. I find now though that I cry even more since I've seen it a few times....now I know the outcome

This a Wonderful film and the performance from Micheal Clark Duncan as the shy, childlike, 8 foot tall mamoth, deservadly won him the oscar nomination and should have won him the oscar. Tom Hanks is also exellent, A great emotional film.

A TRUE CLASSIC - EMOTIONAL AND HEARTFELT!

Once again, Tom Hanks shines! And the character, Percy, was totally believable and detestable....he should win an award for his abilities as well. This movie held me spellbound, even the second time around! One of the best ever....a must have!

    The Green Mile

I could not stop the movie just for a second. The story it tells is remarkable. This movie definitely an award for best actors. Any actor that can fake an urinary infection deserves and award. Percy was my favorite!

    MADE A GROWN MAN CRY

Tom Hanks and Clark put on one of the best performances I've seen. This is the only movie that has made me weep like a baby. Any movie that can make you feel the pain of both the guards and the inmates is a definet must see/must buy movie.

    A PHENOMENAL FILM!

I have seen this movie numerous times and have yet to grasp what exactly makes it so outstanding. Each and every actor in this movie could have won an oscar. It brings the harsh reality of life in a poinient and beatiful setting. Once more this is a phenomenal and truly unforgetable movie!
