The Happiest Toddler on the Block

( 3 )

Overview

In this companion to Dr. Harvey Karp's popular series of books, parents are taught how to curb their toddler's temper tantrums through a new method of communication known as "Toddler-ese." In addition to his claim that this method will both shorten and diminish a child's outbursts, Dr. Karp also claims that by practicing both "Toddler-ese" and the "Fast Food" rule, parents can boost their children's self esteem and make them more patient and respectful.

    Not that thrilled!

We have The Happiest Baby on the Block and felt the 5 S's were very applicable to our newborn twins. We followed many of the techniques suggested by Dr. Karp. So, with one of our twins starting to throw tantrums we thought the Happiest Toddler on the Block might offer some good advice. What Dr. Karp suggests is borderline just silly. I kept an open mind at first and we tried it for a week. My husband and I couldn't practice the technique without bursting into laughter every time we tried it. It's silly. Depending on her mood, her crying did stop a couple of times. But she will also stop if I merely create a diversion or pick her up and hug her. The video did teach me to be more aware of the toddler's feelings and not just say "it's okay" all the time. And there is a parent question and answer session which is good. The video is amateurish and the parent interviews seemed scripted. If I had it to do over I wouldn't buy this. Maybe I'd have tried the book - it's cheaper.
