Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Tony Nigro
Just as interesting as the films of Werner Herzog are the legendary tales that have grown out of the director's relationship with his favorite star, strong-jawed German actor Klaus Kinski. Violence, both physical and emotional, typified their off-screen rapport, and it is a mark of Herzog's genius that he was able to create great cinema around Kinski's unwieldy eccentricities. But the five dramatic films in this limited-edition collection Aguirre: The Wrath of God, Nosferatu: Phantom Der Nacht, Woyzeck, Fitzcarraldo, and Cobra Verde should be viewed more as collaborations than works of a visionary auteur. Each film is deeply passionate, replete with tortuous emotions and hard-to-swallow human truths. Rounding out the six-piece set is My Best Fiend, Herzog's 1999 documentary about his association with Kinski, who died in 1991. Contrasting the director's deadpan demeanor with the actor's menacing manner, the film reflects on the pair's extremely dysfunctional yet creatively fruitful professional relationship with refreshing humor and just a hint of reverence.
