Overview

Nancy Meyers' romantic comedy Holiday stars Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslet as two women who exchange houses in order to get a new lease on life. After each suffers her fair share of romantic disappointments, Englishwoman Iris (Winslet) and L.A. woman Amanda (Diaz) meet on-line at a website devoted to helping people exchange houses for vacations. Each agrees to spend the Christmas holiday at the other's home. While each suffers from a minor case of culture shock, both women also end up becoming involved with a man. Iris makes the acquaintance of an upbeat everyman played by Jack Black, while Amanda spends time with a handsome Brit played by Jude Law. Both women must decide what to do with these new relationships as their pre-arranged house switch is scheduled to last less than two weeks.

All Movie Guide
With The Holiday, director Nancy Meyers aspires to something more than your average chick flick. At least, that would seem to be her intention, since she's building a standard romantic comedy using nonstandard parts. Cameron Diaz is the only real genre veteran here, with Kate Winslet, Jude Law, and Jack Black all relatively new to the experience. But instead of their outsider talents elevating the material, under Meyers, Winslet et al. fall quickly in line with genre norms. This leaves The Holiday -- a film about the desperate need for new scenery -- feeling all too familiar. Which isn't to say it's not a watchable piece of seasonal romantic fluff; just don't confuse it for more than that. Winslet, the most surprising inclusion in the cast, actually seems rather joyous, liberated from the serious demands of her more typical roles. Quite the opposite is the case for Black, who's usually the zaniest guy in the room, and seems a little subdued playing it straight. But the Tenacious D prankster does sneak in some of the improvisational scatting his fans love -- a much-needed, all-too-brief reminder of how going outside the box is supposed to feel. Too bad the Black-Winslet storyline gets the short shrift, given only a hasty romantic angle after she's already spent considerable time befriending an octogenarian screenwriter. Diaz' high-maintenance film editor gets more celluloid, even though she's harder to warm up to -- and not just because she's in an actual wintry environment. Law's charm makes that task a little easier, especially when a surprise revelation gives the impossibly handsome womanizer -- both onscreen and in real life -- some extra dimension. The Holiday may not be as different as its director envisioned, but the target audience should be happy enough in these familiar surroundings.

And its also kind of sweet. To be honest while all the actors did great. I think my favorite has to be Kate Winslet and Jack Black. They were adorable in this and their characters make a cute couple. Noticed that their not much in the movie. Still, it is a cute romantic comedy.

This was exactly what a romantic movie should be...This is what any movie should be...Funny...Touching...Different locations and not stuck in one place which can make the movie feel claustrophobic...I loved this movie and can not wait to watch it over and over and over....Kate winslet shines as a down her luck when it comes to relationships woman...

Perfect blend of humor and bitter-sweet romance. I've been waiting for this release since I went to see it at the movies in December. Strongly recommended!

This is one of the best romantic comedy movie since 'When Harry Met Sally'! It is so well done, and it is very funny, relatable, and just awesome good quality movie! This is a diffenately a must-see and it should be on your list!! More of a girl-movie then a guy-girl movie but of course guys can enjoy it to. Amanda Woods is a very typical American girl/woman living in LA ( has a job as a movie trailer maker) where she has recently had a break-up with her long term boy friend after she found out he was cheating on her. SCreaming in rage and trying to cry (she hasn't shed a tear since she was 15) she decides she wants to go on a holiday, something she hasn't done in many years. As this is happening, in England, Iris ( i forgot her last name) who is working for the newspaper company is trying to get over her love for her boss who has just engaged to another woman. Iris has been watching her love over 3 years trying to figure out what has she done wrong? So when her love announced to the whole company he is engaged, she feels like she has been used and she has just wasted 3 whole years of her life on this man that will never apperciate her. So, she puts her very cute english cottage up for vacation rental and hoping that the person who is willing to rent the place for the holiday will do a home exchange since she desperately needed to get out of England and breathe in some new air. Amanda finds Iris's advertisement and IMs her which Iris immediately responds to and just a few paragraphs and they are on for a home exchange! Iris flies to LA, and Amanda flies to England. Both find the most unexpected love of their lives at the most unlikely places. I highly recommend this movie for all Romantic-comedy lovers, or just comedy! It is deffinately a feel good movie

When combine Cameron Diaz,Kate Winslet,Jude Law, and Jack Black it becomes a true holiday. There are lots of good moments in this movie and little bit of bad moments.I love the chemistry between the two couples in the movie because you have Jude Law and Cameron Diaz as somewhat like Romeo&Juliet characters. With Kate Winslet and Jack Black they are characters from Tuck Everlasting because he is the fun loving guy who shows her that she is important to him and that is true love. The movie is a great romantic comedy that I recommended.

I was hesitant to watch this at first. The movie trailer didn't make me want to rush to the theater to see it. However, I am so glad I did. I now consider this not only one of my favorite romantic comedies but just one of my favorite movies! This move is filled with old-fashion charm and present day wit.

Have you ever seen a movie and you want to see it over and over again? The Holiday is just that kind of movie. This movie is about two women Iris and Amanda who are played by Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz respectively. Amanda, a Los Angeles workaholic has just kicked her boyfriend out of her house because he cheated on her with his secretary and now she feels that she in dire need of change. At the same time Iris, a British newspaper journalist finally realizes that the man she has been pining for for over three years does not love her. She learns that he is engaged and is devastated. She has lost who she believes is the love of her life and now can not seem to put the pieces back together. Amanda goes online and finds a really cool website where she can basically switch house and lives with someone on the other side of the world. Amanda and Iris meet online and decide to swap lives for two weeks, just to get away from all that has been happening in their respective lives. Once in each others homes, Amanda thinks that she has made a huge mistake and tries to book a flight back to the life she has left. However, she soon changes her mind. Graham, played by Jude Law enters and suddenly things are looking up for Amanda. He sweeps her off of her feet in what they both expect to be a one night stands but it turns out to be a lot more. Iris too is having a great time in LA. She becomes friends with Amanda’s neighbor and also a renowned screenwriter. This relationship is what helps her move on from her failed relationship. She meets composer Miles who is played by Jack Black and he sweep her off her feet. Both women have entered new relationships in which they are happy and in love. However, they both have to soon go back to their lives and are faced with a decision. This movie is right up there with Nancy Meyers other movies namely What Women Want and Something’s Got to Give. Meyers have earned my respect for pulling off a movie that has two different plots. Two romance stories in one. This is definitely a treat for anyone who is a fan of romance comedies. It has the perfect blend of comedy and romance. I found it hilarious that Amanda jumps out of the limousine that was to take her to the airport and runs back to Graham’s place in the snow in very high heels. I also found in delightful when Miles makes a special song for Arthur (Amanda’s neighbor) so that he can have confidence when he goes onstage to receive his lifetime achievement award. This was funny because as soon as he hears the song its like he got new life and was able to overcome the flight of stairs. Plus the song was so cheerful that you couldn’t help but laugh. It was very romantic in that Amanda was willing to run in heels to Graham’s house and that she really bonds with Graham’s children. It is also very romantic that Iris decides that her decision of whether to leave for England can wait until after the New Year. This movie is definitely not the typical girl meets guy movie in that both of these women are not actively looking for love. In fact they are trying to avoid it as this is the exact reason why they both have switched lives. They both are not spending their time pinning that they do not have a boyfriend. They are just having a good time and love finds them. Also, what it not typical is the relationship that developed between Miles and Iris. No one would ever guess that they would be in a relationship. This is just a few of the things that make this movie not fall into the typical routine of boy meets girl. It is because of this that I would have to say that this movie has a story line that would keep anyone glued to their seats. It certainly kept me glued to mine. This movie is funny, lighthearted and good all round entertainment for the entire family. The Holiday reminds of Roman Holiday- one of Andrea Hepburn’s movies in which she plays an Egyptian princess who tries to get away fro

This is a charming film. I am not a fan of Jude Law however is the film he is extremely likable. I would have preferred more time spent on the Winslet/Black romance but overall this was enjoyable to watch!

I will admit that I rolled my eyes when my wife pulled it off the shelf to rent, but I actually thought it was pretty good. Although rather ironic that she fell asleep and I stayed awake watching the movie. Worth a watch.

This is a story that has truth and is quite relatable. The two women Cameron Diaz and Kate Winslett are brilliant in their roles. They are fun and loveable. The portrayal of the story is excellently done. The cottage scenes in the UK are so idyllic. Jude Law is handsome and hot. His character is so outstanding and interesting. This really leads to a lively romantic comedy. I really enjoyed Jack Black in this film. I have seen him in others and didn't appreciate his performances. He was really lovable in his performance as the man Kate Winslett meets in L A . I especially enjoyed Kate and her interaction with the neighbor played by Eli Wallach. This was very heartwarming. It was so classic old Los Angeles history in Film making. Loved the movie! High recommendations!

There are only a handful of movies that I like to watch again and again. This movie is one that I grab on those occasions I wish to just "enjoy" a movie. The four main actors are so great in their roles, as if each role was written especially for them. This is a Christmas movie that is certainly not just for the Yuletide season...You will not be disappointed by purchasing it even if you have never seen it before.

I was surprised by how much I liked this movie. It is really sweet, funny, and the characters are interesting. I have watched it several times. I'd never heard of it until I ran across it on TV.
