The Horseman on the Roof

( 6 )

Overview

Jean-Paul Rappeneau's 1995 historical drama The Horseman on the Roof comes to DVD from Miramax with a widescreen transfer. The Dolby Digital Surround soundtrack is rendered in the original French with English subtitles. There are no special features to speak of, but this is a decent presentation of a film that didn't receive a wide theatrical release in the U.S.

    Romance, History and Fantastic Scenery!

I was having insomnia one night and chanced upon this film at the indie channel. It was all in French but subtitled in English. The cinematography was great, particularly for those who are fascinated by the French provencal. Juliette Binoche is ever her luminous self. I can see why she's the Julia Roberts of France albeit the movie if of a period setting. Olivier Martinez seemed to have been born to play the role of Angelo Pardi, a character of contradicting elements: passion and reserve. The chemistry between the two characters were volatile despite the conservative limitations of their time. Wish the director showed less of the morbid aspects of cholera though. It took some time to find this film, alas in VHS, but it was worth the effort.

    Terrible Movie, Obvious Ending

I don't think it was suitable for my age group considering nudity and plague.

    Simply Titilating

I am not a big movie fan nor a big television watcher, but late one night, as a was skimming the channels, I happened upon this movie about 15mn into it. I was transfixed by the beautiful landscape the enchanting story line and the daily rituals of living with the black plaugue. To be honest, I cried my eyes out and had the best time ever wondering how the story was going to end. It did end deliciously! I was still searching a year later for this movie, as I never caught the name of the flick, having come into it late. I finely found it and was happy to say my sister found the story as beautiful as I did and the gentleman hero just as stunningly handsome.... He sure is a cutie!
