Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
This produced-for-video sequel to Disney's celebrated 1996 feature will ring the bell for kids who remain devoted to the good-hearted Quasimodo, even if it is less epic in scope and design than the original the masses, for example, are not so massive this time out. Parents especially will appreciate that Hunch Deux is more kid friendly than the first film with its tragic deaths and untoward desires. Hunchback II tells a much sweeter story, set against the backdrop of the Festival of Love, and most of the original voice cast returns. Tom Hulce, for instance, again voices the lovelorn bell ringer, who this time falls for sweet Madellaine Jennifer Love Hewitt, a circus performer under the thumb of the evil magician Sarousche Michael McKean. Sarousche forces Madellaine to cuddle up to Quasi so he can steal the bejeweled bell, La Fidel. Also back from the original movie are Jason Alexander, hamming it up as the goat-fancying gargoyle Hugo, and Kevin Kline and Demi Moore as the now happily married Phoebus and Esmerelda, whose son Zephyr Haley Joel Osment, the Oscar-nominated young star of The Sixth Sense is Quasi's best friend.

    Victor would vomit.

As it says, it's a very kid-friendly movie. It's got its family values worked in- as any Disney 'masterpeiece' (using the term loosely) should. For what it is, it's pretty good on the entertainment side... but still... Ok. Now, Victor Hugo wouldn't be very pleased with this. Check it out: The original was supposed to be a tragedy anyway- so, after Disney milked a crapload of money after ruining a classic, they make a -SEQUEL-. Ok... why V. Hugo never made a sequel: Because everybody was dead after teaching the reader a lesson in morality. Ok... granted disney is a grand preacher of morality towards children... but... couldn't they find a different story to abuse? There are so many good stories in history that -aren't- tragedies that could be fitted to this purpose... why did they have to pick on poor Quasimodo? (Which, by the way, does -NOT- mean 'half formed.' You may kick Clopin for that). All in all, I guess the movie was ok- but I still have my grudge against the movie for ruining a perfect Victor Hugo masterpiece.
