Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Genevieve Williams
An uneven but heartfelt romantic comedy, The Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls in Love is, at its core, an incredibly affectionate and sincere portrayal of adolescent first love. While the plot is informed by the fact that the lovers in question are, in this case, female, the film's most honest and believable moments are those between its two main characters -- tomboyish, earthy Randy (Laurel Holloman) and privileged, intellectual Evie (Nicole Ari Parker). There are a couple of expected set pieces; Randy invites Evie to dinner with her family, which consists of an aunt, a partner, and an ex, and Evie comes out to her friends, who, somewhat predictably, entirely fail to understand. The somewhat farcical ending feels tacked on, as though writer Maria Maggenti wasn't sure where to take the story after Evie's overprotective mother (Stephanie Berry) discovers her daughter and Randy in bed, but its final moments are of a piece with the rest of the film, which shares its emotional honesty and realistic portrayal of adolescents with the best teen comedies of John Hughes.
