Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Cavett Binion
Produced in Canada as part of a tax-shelter program, this poorly-wrought adaptation of a novel by horror author Ray Russell (Mr. Sardonicus) stars a throughly annoyed-looking John Cassavetes (who looks ready to knock somebody down) as a doctor investigating a series of savage rape-murders in a small Northern town. The crimes, which appear to have been committed by a superhuman sexual predator, are mysteriously linked to the torture-filled nightmares of a local teenager (Duncan McIntosh), who begins to fear that he may somehow be responsible. When Cassavetes, journalist Kerrie Keane and thick-headed sheriff John Ireland dig deeper into the case, they eventually uncover a dark secret interwoven through the town's history -- a demonic presence whose alleged revelation is thoroughly muddled by an unbelievably convoluted script, sloppy editing and a groan-inducing "surprise" finale that fingers the killer's human identity by seemingly picking a character at random. The inherent psychosexual possibilities of the source material are completely lost amid the confusing plot, which is punctuated by sleazy, exploitative rape scenes and bursts of gory violence. Director John Hough fared far better with the excellent Legend of Hell House.
