Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
At the heart of The Invincible Iron Man is the fundamental question that makes the best superhero origin stories so mythically compelling: "Why are you here?" Multi-millionaire playboy inventor Terry Stark (Mark Worden) gets a change in his hedonistic outlook when his latest venture, the resurrection of an ancient Chinese ruin, angers a militant band called the Jade Dragons. The Dragons fear the enterprise will bring about the prophesized awakening of the Mandarin, ruler of the one of history's darkest and most violent dynasties. Mortally wounded in an attack, Stark develops a suit of armor that transforms him into the avenging Iron Man, who races against time to stop a quartet of supernatural Elementals before they can revive the Mandarin and history repeats itself. Marvel's Vietnam War-era superhero has been given an impressive 20th century upgrade. Stark is a characteristically compelling Stan Lee creation, a flawed hero grappling with his father's disappointment, as is Li Mei, a "decent soul" among the Jade Dragons. Despite being animated, The Invincible Iron Man is not kid's stuff. The appropriate PG-13 rating is earned by the intense action sequences, some sexuality (a hot tub dalliance early on) and some sudden, shocking murders. Interviews with The Invincible Iron Man's creative team included among this DVD's bonus features help introduce newcomers to one of the longest-running and most interesting characters in the Marvel universe.
