Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide
This clever, gore-drenched, dialogue-driven, low-budget camp caper was shot in video and has not been transferred to film; the movie looks like TV instead of a traditional piece of cinema. No matter, director/star Dan Clark does not let the technology limit the inventive camera work and ambitious editing, and his script sets the predictable monster genre on its ear. There is a saggy middle third where the "item" -- a ridiculous phallus-shaped puppet -- takes over the thoughts of the criminal crew and sets the thugs into dangerous action, but the over-the-top action pieces carry the show through even this slow bit. A sequence involving transvestites skilled in martial arts only adds to the mirthful mayhem. To top it all off, there seems to be actual philosophic ideas behind The Item. Horror fans longing for the return of Quentin Tarantino will rejoice.
