Overview

Jacques Cousteau was both an innovative oceanographer and an influential documentary filmmaker whose cinematic journeys under the sea prompted a greater understanding of the importance of the world's oceanic ecology. While he was best known for his television series The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau, his later documentary cycle The Cousteau Odyssey followed in the same tradition and featured spectacular underwater footage from around the world as well as valuable lessons on the importance of protecting our oceanic resources. The Jacques Cousteau Odyssey: The Complete Series is a six-disc DVD box set featuring the entire 12-episode run of the show, as Cousteau and his crew follow dolphins and whales, explore the legend of Atlantis, visit Easter Island, investigate the wreckage of ocean vessels, sail down the Nile, and much more.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble
The seemingly tireless Jacques-Yves Cousteau called himself an "oceanographic technician," an apt self-reference for the inventor of SCUBA (self-contained underwater breathing apparatus). For the boomer generation, though, he was the primary guide to the world below the surface of the oceans, thanks to a succession of documentary films and series that aired from the late 1960s through the early '90s. The Cousteau Odyssey -- produced in 12 installments, all included on this 6-disc set -- began on PBS in '77 and ran through '81. It was during this time that Cousteau's son and colleague in the production, Philippe, perished in an airplane crash. Given the filmmaker's proclivity for putting a personal touch on all of his work, the loss is palpable. For those who know more about The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou than they do about the greatest undersea documentarian ever to don a wet suit -- and signature red wool cap -- this is an Odyssey not to be missed.

The original Cousteau series, perfectly presented same as it ever was. Cousteau was truly the original when it comes to nature and wildlife documentary. Planet Earth may have the flash, but Cousteau's Odyssey had the heart. So adorable. (And is required viewing for anyone who thinks himself a fan of "The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou")

These documentaries are still fantastic to watch, and they have an entrancing way about them that hold you to watching. The old feel of the footage and the narration is warm and draws you in. The information in the films are a little outdated at times, but still insightful. The ocean is still widely unknown, so its a great trip under the sea, even for its age.
