The January Man

Overview

Pat O' Connor's quirky comedy about tracking a serial killer, The January Man, comes to DVD with a pair of transfers. The widescreen anamorphic transfer preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1, and is preferable in every way to the standard full-frame image. English and French soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital Surround, and a Spanish soundtrack has been recorded in Dolby Digital Mono. Subtitles are available in all three of those languages. Supplemental materials are limited to the ...

January Man: Starting the year badly

One of the worst films I have ever seen, January Man really has no focus, no plot progression and no character`development. The film starts by signalling-up relations between key characters - notably the brothers Kline and Keitel and Keitel's wife. However, the telltale signs of a naff film are already there to see as the brothers' first encounter is subsumed in cliche and predictability. The film carries on in this style, until the characters become completely absurd. I am not really sure what Susan Sarandon's role was within the film or what type of character she was playing. No sooner have we met her then we come across Alan Rickman, who surely must have considered an injunction to prevent the film ever been shown in Britain. Finally, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio can be forgiven as she was probably young and still trying to make a name for herself. Shame she is used for a gratuitous tit-shot. Sadly, the film is to predictable and really tries to be too many things and ends up being nothing.

    Great Witty Flick!

I stumbled on this movie because I so enjoy Kevin Kline. It is wonderful fun and with enough edge to keep you engrossed. Kevin Kline is, as always, irreverent and sharp but don't miss Alan Rickman's off-beat, low-key role. Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio and Susan Sarandon are perfect counterpoints to Kline and each other. It's fun...it's a lot of fun!
