Overview

Ken Curtis, former singing cowboy and Gunsmoke's Festus, joined right-wing radio's Gordon McLendon in producing this hilariously bad monster movie about a horde of outsized rodents run amok on an isolated island. The creation of mad scientist Baruch Lumet (father of acclaimed director Sidney Lumet), the monster shrews (portrayed by collies in goofy rubber masks!) escape the lab during a hurricane and devour nearly every other animal on the island before seeking human prey -- including star James Best and girlfriend Ingrid Goude (1957's Miss Universe), who are stranded on the island by the same storm. The survivors manage to escape to safety thanks to some goofy contraptions constructed from trash cans. This one is best remembered by bad-film buffs for its tail-wagging canine stars and a multitude of famous names on both sides of the camera. Curtis and McLendon's companion film The Giant Gila Monster is slightly less ridiculous.

What we have here is a nice Ocean view, Free on site parking(If you have a boat) And all the Sand and Surf you can possibly use. Oh, did I forget to mention a pack of domesticated Collies wearing Cardboard and Remmnant rugs from the local five and dime. It turns out these dogs were actually once mice. But someone in their drunken stupidity (And in the Movie, Ann Points this out to him) left the cage door open and the damn things couldn't stop eating! Enter, the island of the Killer Shrews. Two guys on a boat go to the island for a visit and one of them get's off'd pretty much from the get go. If only he had a stronger and taller tree to climb, I say he would have made it. The Shrews do wind up eating right through the walls of the house where a Scientist who helped create them, along with Ann, Who saves this film with her Smoking looks!!, and a couple of other louts are wholed up. I did like the idea that they had a fully stocked bar while they were pondering their next move. Our Resident Wyatt Earp decides he is going to have a drink and ask's anyone else if they'd like one. But there's one in every crowd who just has to have his coffee. The Lovely Ann offers to make it and makes the mistake of opening the door....Twice! On the second try, the shrew comes in and bites his creator on the leg. He buys the farm as we now find out the shrews are Poisonious! However, Wyatt Earp shoots the Shrew .And if that wasn't bad enough, they start chomping through the walls of the house!! The Great escape is on, and this is one to behold, You have to watch the movie to see how they pull this one off. And the guy who left the cage door open, He winds up being sorry...Permamently! Enjoy! patrick.mccoy@excite.com
