Overview

Reggie Hudlin directs Tim Meadows in this big-screen adaptation of Meadows' Saturday Night Live character The Ladies Man. The film comes to DVD with a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. Closed-captioned English soundtracks are rendered in both Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby Digital Surround, while a French soundtrack has been recorded in Dolby Digital Surround as well. English subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include interviews with the cast and crew, and the theatrical trailer. Although this is a solid release from Paramount, the DVD screams for deleted scenes or more information about how Meadows created and shaped the character.

Lorne Michaels is at it again, giving another of his babies a big-screen promotion, unaware that the mildly amusing premise of a short sketch faces a tougher task over the course of 90 minutes. Tim Meadows was always strictly a supporting player on Saturday Night Live, so it's no surprise he seems to be looking for help as The Ladies Man -- a lisping, sexually incorrect loveline host who swills Courvoisier and ends sentences with "in the butt." All this could be cheeky and outré in a good way, but Meadows is too passive to make the character outrageous -- which would still leave things short of a good movie. The central joke doesn't work well, either. The character is supposed to be so irresistible that he lures women out of happy marriages and into bed, but what earned the limited laughs on the show was the knowledge that his braggadocio must be totally imagined, because his pickup methods are so bluntly ineffective. Having him actually succeed not only misunderstands the quiddity of Leon Phelps, it also snaps the link to realism, an essential anchor in the best SNL films (such as Wayne's World). But to probe so deeply overlooks the obvious surface problem: The Ladies Man is silly and simplistic, written with little momentum and no insight. Several game supporting actors try in vain to elevate the material -- most successfully, Will Ferrell; most bizarrely, Julianne Moore.
New York Times - A.O. Scott
"The Ladies Man" has some funny, dirty-minded jokes, a few amusing cameos (including Julianne Moore in clown makeup) and a soundtrack loaded with juicy cuts of mid-70's vintage soul and funk: a lot of Gamble and Huff, a soupçon of Isley Brothers and a plateful of Parliament's "Up for the Down Stroke." Mostly it has Tim Meadows as Leon Phelps, a pint-size Don Juan with a foot-high Afro, a heavy lisp and a taste for the finer things in life: Courvoisier, scented candles, water beds and a special product called "Piña Colada Butt Lotion."... It may cross your mind that this is a movie about a black man pursued by a mob of whites intent on castrating him for improper attention to "their women." But Mr. Hudlin is not Spike Lee, and he smothers the potentially volatile political and sexual subtext of the movie in genial silliness.
