Overview

The eighth film in the Land Before Time series comes to DVD with a widescreen transfer that preserves the original 1.33:1 aspect ratio of this direct-to-video release. English and French soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1. There are no subtitles, but the English soundtrack is closed captioned. Supplemental materials include a handful of games for children, a karaoke/singalong section, and extra goodies for the kids if one has access to a DVD-ROM drive. This is a fine family friendly release from Universal, but there is little here for the average DVD consumer.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
Thirteen years, one theatrical feature, and now seven produced-for-video sequels later, this latest entry in The Land Before Time series shows there's still plenty of Before Time left. The dinosaur friends from the Great Valley explore feelings, respect, and family ties in this heartwarming 72-minute adventure. "White sparkles from the sky" cover the Great Valley, and orphan Spike is invited to join a herd of wandering fellow "Spiketails" in search of food. When Spike's adoptive sister Ducky follows him into the Mysterious Beyond, it's up to Littlefoot, Cera, and Petrie to bring her back. Accompanying them is disgraced dinosaur elder Mr. Thicknose (voiced by Robert Guillaume). The adventure really begins to snowball when an avalanche traps the little dinos and teamwork becomes their only hope of returning home safely. Compared to recent Disney theatrical efforts such as Tarzan and Dinosaur or the computer-generated magic of Shrek, the animation here seems a bit old-fashioned. But children love these little dinosaurs and can identify with their wide-eyed explorations. The DVD includes interactive games, puzzles, and sing-along songs.

As a Grandma, I had some time with my grandson and we watched this dvd many times and he would always cry at the song "Family". I asked him why? and he said it was a sad song, so I said you don't have to watch it, but it makes me happy! He is 4, and his Mom and Dad have just divorced and he saw a very real meaning to the story and song. I'm thankful for such sweet stories to help children in their hour of need.
