The Larry Sanders Show - Season 1Director: Garry Shandling, Ken Kwapis, Todd Holland, Rip Torn
The complete first season of the critically acclaimed cable comedy The Larry Sanders Show comes to DVD in a three-disc set. Columbia's work on this 1.33:1 full-frame transfer is only passable at best. There is a fair amount of dirt, grain, and lack of detail in each of the 13 episodes. While some of the colors and black levels look even and well saturated, the bulk of these episodes appear very soft and mediocre. The audio is presented in Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround and has the feeling of a very flat mono soundtrack. The sound mix on this disc is generally clean, though it is hardly close to impressive. Also included on this disc are English and Spanish subtitles. The only extra feature available on this three-disc set is a conversation between star Garry Shandling and writer Tom Shales. Just under 30 minutes long, this is a nice feature that should shed a little light on the series for fans. Otherwise, this set is void of any other supplements that might have heightened the viewers excitement about this set.

The Larry Sanders Show implausibly fuses humanism with a surreal environment. The characters -Tambour's Hank Kingsley especially- are histerically/believably flawed. They exist in a late night talk show world with self-parodying celebrities. Season One standouts include Larry's backstabbing friendship with Dana Carvey and Carol Burnett's wonderful line, "I saw your b--ls". Treasure every scene with the underused Janeane Garofalo. Fans demand the other seasons on DVD. Why haven't they come out? We demand David Duchovny's turn as Larry's stalker, and the the addition of Kevin Thompson as Hank's assistant. What about the entrance of Larry's rival Jon Stewart?
