Overview

Steve Norrington's little known follow-up to Blade, The Last Minute comes to DVD in a surprisingly packed unrated version from Palm Pictures and Lions Gate Home Entertainment. With a sharp 2.35:1 widescreen picture, the colors jump off the screen and does justice to Norrington's slick look at the underbellies of London. The audio quality ranges from a full Dolby 5.1 Surround track to a normal Dolby stereo track, with two commentaries: one by the director and another from the star Max Beesley. At first glance, the features section looks slim, with only a theatrical trailer, some Palm previews (Sex and Lucia, The Believer, and Scratch), and a few web links to chew on. However, if you look closer, you can select the hidden roach icon and question mark down at the lower right hand corner of the screen. The first takes you through some well-designed menus littered with extras, while the latter takes you to a simple list of those same features. You can find featurettes in both menus, including "Producing The Last Minute" (an interview with producer Matthew Justice) along with behind-the-scene looks at the style of the film to the make-up prosthetics. Also available is a character-tree video, which discusses the strange slew of characters in The Last Minute, along with cast and crew biographies inside the submenu. Other bonus material includes interviews about the director's biographical screenplay alongside a music video and TV selector (featuring special, full TV segments made especially for the film). If you don't count the production notes, one of the final neat things in this package is the Countdown Calculator, which estimates how many weeks you have until you reach 90 by you entering your age. (Warning: It's depressing no matter how old you are.) All in all, this is a fine disc, especially considering that most of these hidden features are missing from the rated version.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide
The storyline of Last Minute is what happens, but it's not by any means what this film is about. Writer-director Steven Norrington (Blade) brings a phenomenal amount of action to a dangerously literate script with this one-of-a-kind combination of Trainspotting and Blue Velvet. The film employs a vivid visual style -- not unlike that of Terry Gilliam's wondrous excesses -- and sly, off-kilter dialogue with David Lynch-ian overtones. Max Beesley gives a star-making performance as a pop icon descending into personal Hell, but Jason Isaacs' mobster, who sings Percy Sledge love ballads during his violent, bloody sprees, and the other secondary characters are equally unforgettable. Music by electronic bands, including Aphex Twin, adds power to the visuals. And yes, there is a message amid the madness. Pay attention.
