Overview

On the 1st of January in 1900, Danny Boodmann Bill Nunn, the mechanic of the transatlantic liner Virginian bound for America, finds an abandoned baby on board and decides to keep him. Nicknamed Novecento 1900, the boy grows up on the ship hidden from everyone. His presence is revealed when Danny dies in an accident. The young '1900' manages to hide again despite threats from the captain. Discovering a passion for music, he teaches himself to play the piano without being able to read the notes, and he soon becomes a virtuoso whose reputation spreads beyond the confines of the ship. Even the famous jazz piano player, Jelly Roll Morton Clarence Williams III, gets on board for a challenge because he has heard rumors about the greatest piano player in the world living on a ship. The story is told by Max Tooney, Novocento's old trumpeter friend, who reminisces about the incredible pianist who never set foot on land. After two films about cinema, Giuseppe Tornatore comes up with the story of a highly imaginative artist who lives only for and through his art. Tornatore was inspired by a theatre monologue written in 1994 by Alessandro Baricco, and the film was shot partly in Odessa, on a sixty-year-old Russian freighter, and partly in the Cinecitta studios in Rome. Tim Roth's performance as the talented but reserved Novocento is remarkable, and the music of Ennio Morricone plays a vital role in the film. La leggenda del pianista sull'oceano, which was retitled The Legend of 1900 for US distribution after forty-five minutes have been cut, was originally two hours and forty minutes when it was shown to great success in Italy in autumn of 1998. The US version had its world premiere at the 1999 Locarno International Film Festival.

    Incredible story, epic-scale music

I saw this movie in Italian three years ago before it was even available in the United States, and I fell in love with it the first time because of the music. When I finally got an English cut of the movie, the true beauty of this movie was as sobering as a slap with a cold hand in the waking hours of a hot day. Magnificent.

    ROTH GAVE AN OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE

When I first saw this movie in my local video shop, I tought ''Yeah, wright!'', because Tim Roth wasnt one of my favorite actors and he never had a god movie accept Pulp fiction and Reservoir dogs. Then I saw the movie, and I lost the words, the movie is great, and Tim Roth became, since then, one of my favorite actors.I hope that other people will find time to watch the movie.

    A Must See!!!

One of the greatest movies I have ever viewed. Up there with Citizen Kane but much more entertaining. The photography is excellent as well as the acting, directing, and score. I was very surprise that it had not won every award given. A MUST SEE!!!

    One Great movie

My family brought this movie when they came to visit. I didn't especially want to watch but I fell in love with it. So when a scratch on the DVD prohibited us from watching the last 1/4 of the movie I drove 45 miles to the nearest place that had it so we could watch the end. It is fantastic.

    Spellbinding..a little known Gem...

I am a lover of all movies...but i truly enjoy idependents and actors/actresses of independents one of my favorite actors is Tim Roth..who is called the idependent king.. Idependents is where the great movies are. This movie is one of the few movies that is a little known gem. Mainstream auidences may not know this movie but anyone who is a avid of idependent films knows this movie. This is an amazing story of an incredible pianist who never sets foot on land..this virtuoso's name is Novecento (1900) for he was found on january 1, 1900 by a steamliner mechanic who raises him as his own who names him after the year he finds him. He is hidden by the world...but 1900's true passion is Music the piano ...here on the ship he teaches himself to play the piano by ear...amazing he can play the piano without being able to read the notes. The pianist story is told by max tooney Novocento's trumpet player..he tells the tale of his good friend a pianst so incredible his fame goes beyond the ship...and becomes a legend...the legend of 1900. this movie is beautifuly told, it's a movie that will make you laugh, cry and believe in Tim Roth the legend of 1900.

    Rare beauty...

I have seen this movie numerous times and it still rattles me to tears every time. This movie warms my heart in such a way that it takes me days to recover. The story and actors are incredible, especially Tim Roth. I never pictured him a roll like this but he played it immaculately. I do not beleive anyone else could have played his part any better. He is a master. The movie has moved me in a way none has ever done. It is my favorite now and I shall watch it over & over again and never tire...

It caught me by surprise and blew my mind

I was on a plane trip to TWN and was disappointed I slept through a movie I wanted to see. The Legend of 1900 was on instead. After watching the movie, I was blown away. I couldn't help telling all my coworkers that they HAD to see the movie. I normally don't like serious movies, but this one was incredible. The music is amazing. The acting was great. As a guy, I normally like action flicks or comedies, but this was a winner. I've bought 5 movies in my life... this one one of them.

    The Legend 1900...wow

The Legend of 1900 is a very vigorous dramatic, and remarkable film. I?ve seen it 7 times, and still I cry. The music, Jazz, Big Band, and Classical they all just take you breath away. This movie touched my heart, and soul, and I hope that it will touch yours too.

    Quality...in spades

This must be one of the finest, most interesting, original and amusing movies ever made, with something for everyone. It features a magnificent score, superb acting, an incredible set and by far, one of the most unusual stories ever told. It is gripping and a must see for any age. I loved this film and have watched it over and over with the same satisfaction. Don't miss this gem.

    Mesmerizing

A rare find not to be missed. If you enjoy piano and jazz, the soundtrack is mesmerizing, sometimes haunting, and always breathtaking. The camera angles, the touching moments (especially at the very beginning when he's selling the trumpet), and the development of the characters make this one of the very few movies that I have purchased (the soundtrack too!).

    The movie that hits

Over all I thaught the movie was great and I loved it its not that often that I see a movie quiet like this one. This is a movie that really hits home its not one that you just say hay it was good and then forget about it. This is oone that you think about for a long time and when you just get it out of your head you think about and it drives you crazey because you liked it so much.

    Cinema Perfecto

I was thrilled to discover a movie by the same director of my all time favorite film Cinema Paradiso. Fearing that no movie could compare, I was skeptical to say the very least. In a word, I found myself completely entranced from the opening scene that took my breath away to one of the most whimsical scenes ever filmed featuring a baby grand piano in a leading role. A stunning film, a story line that tugs at every emotion you hold most dear, and characters that touch the softest spot in your heart.

    An Engrossing Experience!

I found myself so lost in the movie that I was actually disappointed that it had to end. Each character was perfectly cast. The musical score could not have been done any better. So wonderful you'll never be tired of watching it.

    absolutely perfect!!

this was one of the best written and perfectly portrayed films i have ever seen. a friend once told me that the difference between a good movie and a great movie is whether you can see the actor or the character when you watch it. i didn't see tim roth; i saw 1900. legend of 1900 is absolutely perfect!!
