Let me preface this by saying that I didn't read the book first! I am an avid reader, and I know how that can affect your opinion of any movie. But I did find this movie creepy and moody, with the right blend of shocks. Clive Rivell is trying to use technology to get at the heart of a house haunting, but he's smart enough to take along some folks who can figure out the real problems. Watching their terror as the things evolve is fun. I love Roddy McDowell in creepy movies. Probably the only person without a real purpose is Gale Hunnicutt and her role, whatever that was. Perfect movie for a rainy day, with a bowl of popcorn. It just doesn't have the same effect on a sunny day. I'm happy to get it at this special sale price.

I was very disappointed by this film...especially since the screenplay was written by Richard Matheson!!!! What was he thinking??? Yeah, the movie is true to the book in alot of ways, but the really scary parts were omitted out, or were just not very well done. The book "Hell House" is one of the best haunted house novels I've ever read! But this movie doesn't do the book any justice, even as an individual piece of art. I think the present-day special effects technology, and a really good director could remake this film to be a genuine horror classic! The 1973 version doesn't measure up to the book, and Roddy McDowell is a total dork -- he wasn't what I envisioned as Fischer.

This movie was barely scary, relying more on sexual themes than suspense. The thing that makes this movie one of the worst movies I've ever seen, however, is the end. Anticlimatic does not even begin to describe the ending of this film. It was supposed to be shocking and slightly terrifying, I suppose, but it really missed it's mark. I was laughing harder than I had in a very long time. There are no words to describe this movie... except maybe ridiculous. Only buy it if you want a comedy.

I did not like the Movie as well as I liked the book as it was not nearly as scary nor horrifying. I gess the mind can recreate what the author is trying to convey in a much stronger and more powerful manner than what that sane author can put into a screen play. The movie is much more condensed and shorter than the book, and the house did not seem quite as bad as the one in the book. The evilness of the hell house as it appears in the book makes it one of ultimate haunted houses of all time and I shall never forget it. I still have occaisonal bad dreams of the hissing witch as it appeared in the book, not from the movie. If you want the full scare and full story, stick to the book. For a little halloween fun the movie is ok.
