The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg

( 1 )

Overview

The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg is composed almost entirely of interview clips from an array of audio sources. This 2.0-channel Dolby Surround transfer presents them in fine fashion and provides impressive clarity. Documentaries of this nature are difficult to review in terms of picture quality due to the variety of interview sources included from past years. Much of the material on this full-frame transfer stems from historical baseball clips and conversations from many years ago. Overall, this presentation...

Overall, this presentation does its best to offer a clear picture, and the result is an acceptable transfer.Aviva Kempner grew up in Detroit and heard many stories about Hank Greenberg from her family. Her feature-length commentary highlights a nice selection of supplements on this disc. Kempner speaks constantly throughout the feature and provides an interesting background to the events occurring on the screen. This disc also contains several pages of text notes from Kempner that briefly describes the origins and concepts for the film. The other major inclusion is a collection of 25 minutes of additional interviews that failed to make the final cut. There are more comments from son Stephen Greenberg, pitcher Hal Newhouser, Alan Dershowitz, and others. The information presented could easily have been in the film, but time constraints forced some deletions. The remaining supplements include several glowing film reviews, bios for Greenberg and Kempner, Greenberg's statistics, and the full-frame theatrical trailer.

Editorial Reviews

All Movie Guide - Tom Wiener
Among the many virtues of this film is its persistence in tracking down a variety of interview subjects (including several of Hank Greenberg's surviving teammates), an interview with Greenberg when he was still in good health, and telling footage of his prowess with the bat. Director Aviva Kempner amply documents the extra dimension to Greenberg's career, which provided millions of Jews with a rare sports hero, in the face of the rise of the Third Reich. The film also shows the contrasting bookends to Greenberg's major league stint. He was lucky to come up with the Detroit Tigers in the mid-'30s, when they were fielding the American League's best team, but in the end, when he fell out of favor with the Tiger owner, he was suddenly traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates, then the National League's worst team. Greenberg comes across here as an articulate, bright, and generous teammate and competitor. Because his last year in baseball, 1947, coincided with Jackie Robinson's first, Greenberg was able to offer Robinson encouragement learned from his early days, when opposing teams and fans taunted him with anti-Semitic remarks.

It's a Hit -- Not just for Baseball Fans

I watched this film twice when it came out at a nearby theater. Great footage and wonderful vignettes and interviews with a wide cast of baseball fans who remember Hank Greenberg's illustrious career: actor Walter Matthau, Sen. Carl Levin, and others.
