The Lion King 1½

Overview

Ten years after The Lion King shot to the top at the box office and first introduced the characters of Simba Matthew Broderick and his pals Timon Nathan Lane and Pumbaa Ernie Sabella, Disney presented this retelling of the Academy Award-winning animated musical. Switching the perspective to that of meerkat Timon and warthog Pumbaa, The Lion King 1 1/2 puts a new spin on the events of the original film. This time around, the comic duo are conveniently at the center of much of the story. Along with returning cast ...

The straight-to-video film also features the never-before-heard song "That's All I Need."

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Donald Liebenson
The Lion King 1½ is a clever companion to the original animated blockbuster, a produced-for-video sequel that focuses on the Lion King narrative from the perspectives of Timon and Pumbaa. How did Timon and Pumbaa meet? What is the origin of "Hakuna Matata"? In a format that plays a bit like Mystery Science Fiction Theater 3000, Timon and Pumbaa fast-forward, rewind, pause, and break into their own movie to add their skewed commentary to the familiar scenes. What lacks in majestic animation, it makes up for in a slaphappy script that subverts The Lion King's iconic moments with occasionally gaseous glee. As the meerkat outcast looking for a predator-free home where he can fit in, Nathan Lane delivers a performance every bit as inspired as Robin Williams's Genie in Aladdin. Ernie Sabella's lovable lug Pumbaa is the steadfast other half of one of the screen's great comedy teams. Joining the voice cast are Julie "Marge Simpson" Kavner as Timon's mother and Jerry Stiller as his excitable Uncle Max. Reprising their signature roles from the original film are Matthew Broderick as Simba, Moira Kelly as Nala, Robert Guillaume as the metaphor-dispensing Rafiki, and Whoopi Goldberg and Cheech Marin as those nasty hyenas. Can you feel the laughs tonight? will make your family roar.

    Great for toddlers!

Gotta love that the violence and evil villans are practically non existant in this hysterical version from Timon & Pumbaa's point of view. The original freaked out my 2 1/2 yr. old ,so this one is perfect for little ones and princessed out parents!

    bleh

This was clearly a mere cash-in on the original work. It was little more than a glorified clip-show. The information about Timon's past would have been better explained in the animated series than expanded to be it's own movie. I half expected the ending song to be 'we're sorry for the clip show! Have no fears, we've got stories for years!' Disney, if you've got nothing creative or good to show, we won't be offended if nothing comes out. Better to remain silent than to churn out the first idea to come across your mind whether it's good or not.

    Awesome! :-) :-)

This movie is a lot of fun. My kids and I enjoy it very much. We watch it at least twice a week. It¿s clearly done for both, kids and grown ups. My 3 year old son sometimes doesn¿t want to go to sleep before the movie is over. Excellent family movie. My biggest recommendation. Two thumbs up.

While not as good as the original, Lion King 1 1/2 is a fun romp and I think it was meant to be a fun, not so serious movie. I can only hope Disney does as well with their adaptation of Robert Stanek's Magic Lands Journey Beyond.

    Buy It and Laugh

A hilarious and creative re-telling of the Lion King story! It is definitely not a sequel. All ages will find this entertaining with some humor more enjoyed by kids and other more enjoyed and appreciated by parents or grandparents watching with them.

    2 Paws Up!!

'The Lion King 1 1/2' is the second direct-to -video movie I actually enjoyed.(The first one's '101 Dalmatians 2: Patch's London Adventure'.)I thought it was good enough to be released in theaters. The dialouge was great, the plot had some surprisingly sweet parts, and the songs were incredible. The best numbers were 'Grazing in the Grass','Digga Tunnah',and 'That's All I Need'. This movie is totally worth watching.
