Finding Nemo may have ended The Lion King's reign as the all-time highest grossing animated feature, but The Lion King remains among the crowning achievements from the Disney kingdom. Touted as the first Disney animated feature based on an original story, The Lion King incorporates a primal mix of Bambi's rite of passage into manhood, Hamlet's tragic tale of family treachery, and The Jungle Book's slacker jive, all set to the Oscar-winning musical score by Elton John and Tim Rice. Unlike Aladdin, which only came to life when the Genie was onscreen, this is a true ensemble piece, with a gallery of colorful characters, brought to life by a pedigreed voice cast. Simba (voiced as a cub by Jonathan Taylor Thomas and as an adult by Matthew Broderick) just can't wait to be king. His evil uncle Scar (Jeremy Irons) plots the murder of his brother, King Musafa (James Earl Jones at his regal best), and banishes Simba. Exiled, Simba adopts the no-worries, "Hakuna Matata" lifestyle of meerkat Timon (Nathan Lane) and warthog Pumbaa (Ernie Sabella), until he is compelled to return home and fulfill his destiny. G-rating aside, this is potent stuff: The death of Bambi's mother was a romp in the meadow compared to the thundering wildebeest stampede that kills Musafa; and the climactic claw-to-claw between Scar and Simba makes for intense viewing as well. Disney fetes its leonine hit in a two-disc Platinum Edition, with segments devoted to the artistic evolution of the film (the deleted scenes and abandoned concepts are particularly interesting) and the Tony Award-winning stage adaptation. The first disc offers viewers a choice between the original theatrical version and a Special Edition that features a new song from the stage production, "Morning Report," animated and integrated into the movie. The Lion King Collector's Gift set, meanwhile, includes the two-disc Platinum Edition, a book, and five original signed character drawings in a handsome case.

The Lion King 1½ is a clever companion to the original animated blockbuster, a produced-for-video sequel that focuses on the Lion King narrative from the perspectives of Timon and Pumbaa. How did Timon and Pumbaa meet? What is the origin of "Hakuna Matata"? In a format that plays a bit like Mystery Science Fiction Theater 3000, Timon and Pumbaa fast-forward, rewind, pause, and break into their own movie to add their skewed commentary to the familiar scenes. What 1½ lacks in majestic animation, it makes up for in a slaphappy script that subverts The Lion King's iconic moments with occasionally gaseous glee. As the meerkat outcast looking for a predator-free home where he can fit in, Nathan Lane delivers a performance every bit as inspired as Robin Williams's Genie in Aladdin. Ernie Sabella's lovable lug Pumbaa is the steadfast other half of one of the screen's great comedy teams. Joining the voice cast are Julie "Marge Simpson" Kavner as Timon's mother and Jerry Stiller as his excitable Uncle Max. Reprising their signature roles from the original film are Matthew Broderick as Simba, Moira Kelly as Nala, Robert Guillaume as the metaphor-dispensing Rafiki, and Whoopi Goldberg and Cheech Marin as those nasty hyenas. Can you feel the laughs tonight? 1½ will make your family roar.

As part of the artistic zenith of Disney's second golden age of animation that began with The Little Mermaid, The Lion King was Disney's pride. As befits royalty, Simba's Pride was Disney's most ambitious direct-to-video production, ensuring the continuation of the circle of sales life for the franchise. This was the first of Disney's "next generation" sequels created to engage a new audience with the adventures of the offspring of already beloved Disney characters. Simba's daughter Kiara (Neve Campbell) resists her father's advice to "stay on the path I've marked out for you." Just as the original film echoed Shakespeare's Hamlet, so does the sequel borrow a page from the Bard's Romeo and Juliet (but with a much happier ending). Kiara meets Kovi, an "outsider" handpicked by the late Scar to follow in his paw prints. Kiara and Kovi become friends and fall in love, which Kovi's mother, Zira (Susanne Pleshette), plans to exploit to take revenge on Simba. Simba is not too pleased, either. Simba's Pride is not as primal an experience as The Lion King, but it is much more family friendly. The animation is impressive, if not as majestic, and the key voice cast is back, including Matthew Broderick as Simba and Nathan Lane and Ernie Sabella as veldt-belt comedians Timon and Puumba. Of the songs, "Love Will Find a Way," "We Are One," and "He Lives in You" (from the Broadway production) rank with the original's Oscar-winning score. Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon penned Zira's wickedly funny "My Lullaby," in which she rapturously fantasizes a grisly end to Simba and daughter. Whether Simba's Pride is worthy of the Special Edition treatment is debatable, but parents can purchase this features-packed two-disc set with "Hakuna Matata" (that means "no worries," in case you've forgotten).
