Disney's The Little Mermaid was the first in a series of blockbusters that restored the venerable firm's reputation as the world's premiere animated-feature factory. The title character is a precocious teenager named Ariel, the daughter of Triton, king of the Sea. Against her dad's wishes, Ariel journeys beyond her own world to the surface, where she falls in love with Prince Eric, a handsome human. Foolishly, the little mermaid enters into an agreement with evil sea witch Ursula in order to become human herself. The wistfully melancholy ending of the original Hans Christian Andersen story is dispensed with in favor of a joyously happy ending-but not before a spectacular climactic confrontation between Ursula and Triton. The obligatory Disney comic relief is handled by such freshly minted characters as Sebastian the Crab, who, courtesy of voiceover artist Samuel E. Wright, sings the film's Oscar-winning "Under the Sea." Other voices are provided by Broadway star Jodi Benson (as Ariel) and such Hollywood reliables as Buddy Hackett, Pat Carroll, Kenneth Mars, and Rene Auberjonois. The enormous box-office take of The Little Mermaid made possible such future Disney cartoon ventures as Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Pocahontas, and The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Little Mermaid was my favorite movie as a child and now im 22 and i still love it This movie isn't just for kids but grownups can enjoy it too The song part of that world is wonderful and Ariel is a redhead which is very odd most mermaids are blondes but this diseny movie is a classic and Sebstation the talking crab is funny and cute so is flounder Funny part the crab Seabastion yells She's got legs you idot!! and king Triton yells Humans What about Humans?!! Lol This is a great diseny movie
I Loved it!!! Last time I saw it was before my grandmother gave her edition away. Back then it was a video, now its a DVD. This movie is one of the treasures of my disney's collection. It's sweet, thrilling, romantic, and filled with dreams. Perfect for a gift!!!
I think people of all ages are able to appreciate this film. I watched this as a young child and I still watch today (I am 25). It is a classic. Every girl identifies with Ariel and the music is amazing. I also have the soundtrack. I recommend this to everyone, especially parents who have young girls at home.
This is yet another great classic from Disney. The plot was interesting with fun and memorable songs that will stay in your mind for a while. My only issue with the movie was the immediate feeling of "love" from our 16 year old heroine. But things worked out for them in the end, so I really can't complain too much! ;)
Bootleg copy. discovered this 4 months after I bought it for my wife for a christmas present because we hadn't physically opened it and expected it. I generally can tell but the red flag is the movie title, i.e. The Little Mermaid Disc 1 is inscribed on the inside of the disc. Never buy a disney movie unless it's directly from disney or retail store like walmart, target, frys, etc. second time this has happen. Aladdin was too. both purchased from this website from a reputable seller will all positive ratings. I will be shocked if I get a refund. Scum man.
So, this movie is awesome, it's not porn (although Ariel probably gave me my first mini-woodie), there's nothing wrong with it. Tito, YOU are the problem here. But I have a remedy. Go find a large tub, possibly a bucket or trash can that you can fit in. Fill it with hot burning scalding oil. Proceed to get into the container with the said hot oil. Problem solved. Alternatively, if that's too much work, go find a volcano, heard they are pretty hot too.
Hard to find. My granddaughter wanted this. Was very glad to find it!
I couldn't possibly agree less with Elisabeth down there. I don't think everyone familiar with the original Hans Christian Anderson version of The Little Mermaid would be upset with this version. Certainly some, but not everyone. If you think this movie was too scary for kids, then you couldn't possibly think the original would be suitable, since the mermaid's tongue is cut off, she feels incredible pain like knives when she walks, the prince marries someone else, and instead of killing him with the magic knife, she allows herself to die with the witch's curse. NOW THAT is not suitable for children. I like the Disney happy ending. The music is good, the villian is what she should be, and the prince tries to save her. I love the songs "Under the Sea" and "Part of Your World." This is definately one of the best Disney classics ever! The newer Disney movies don't even compare. (At least they're trying to go back to classic tales, and they're currently working on Rapunzel and The Princess and the Frog with the first black princess.) Anyway, this is definately a family movie. I give it the full five stars!
As a movie (art, design, music, etc.) I adore it. It was a favourite of mine growing up, and still is, but, I cannot say that I like this DVD. As usual, Disney's digital restorations are poorly done. There isn't much difference, but their reds were poorly handled, turning pink in the strangest moments, becoming ultra-bright, or becoming a very bloody red. They had the same problem with Sleeping Beauty, The Lion King, and Alice In Wonderland. I guess that I cannot reccomend any of Disney's current rereleases for fear of other colour sensitive people buying them then wishing that they could bang their head against the wall. It's still a great movie, but the quality is worse than that of the video. If you can, get it on VHS. By the way, I returned my copy of this DVD.
Great movie.Cool songs. Also a great movie for the family.
Ariel's hair is tragically dated, yet the film remains timeless and fundamentally charming. The world of the mer-people is somewhat paradoxical because, of course first of all, they themselves are incapable of being catagorized biologically and thanks to the magic of the english language which works perfectly underwater, they have no problem communicating with the humans. Besides all that, what I am still bothered by is the lack of information about the mer-people's culture. The king rules them, but we hardly see any of them. There is somewhat of a reason for this, but it is only touched upon briefly. The other thing I noticed this much more recent viewing, is how overwhelmingly white the mer-world is. Of course, it is supposed to take place in unspecified historical Europe, but that doesn't explain why the mer-people speak the exact same language that the humans do. But nevert
I've loved "The Little Mermaid" my whole life (I was born the same year it came out) and it's held a place in my heart for many reasons. The story is engaging, magical, and doesn't take itself too seriously - which is actually a good thing. The film itself is chockful of memorable moments. The songs are truly say "Disney" they're of course great. Like "The Swan Princess", "The Little Mermaid" has a nice soft look that's not too hard on the eyes or obsessed with detail. Also like "Swan Princess", this movie features a brave and loving hero, a cunning villain, and a heroine who's outspoken, sweet, and magical. Ariel is easily that good a heroine. Her unique personality (a combination of innocence, courage, and rebelliousness) shines through her gorgeous looks. And instead of wishing for romance, she finds it accidently. Plus, this is probably the first Disney movie where the girl rescues the guy! All in all, this is a sweet movie filled with everything one would expect from Disney.
This is easily among my all-time favorite movies--possibly topping the disney list.
This movie is best ,my grandchildren, and now great grandchildren are enjoying it as much as i am.
A five star almost instantly. The movie is perfect for your soon to be five year old and up! A Brilliant family movie that made Disney what it is today. Ariel is a headstrong and loyal girl who finds out who she really is by breaking the rules. Teaches your children a valuble lesson: Always stand up for what you believe in. (Thats what it always ment to me) ^__^
This is the charming and delightful tale of Ariel, a beautiful, mischievious mermaid princess who dreams of life on land. When she rescues the handsome Prince Eric from a storm, Ariel immediately falls in love and impulsively strikes a deal with the wonderfully evil Ursula that will make her human. Little does she know, Ursula has other plans in mind for her! Ariel must soon win her prince's love and save her father's kingdom, all in a heart-pounding race against time! Supporting characters include Ariel's reluctant chaperone, a Jamaican reggae-singing crab named Sebastion, her loyal and chubby best friend, Flounder, her protective yet loving father, King Triton, and the harebrained seagull, Scuttle! The Little Mermaid is a wonderful film that the whole family will thoroughly enjoy!
I loved this movie ever since it came out when I was 9 years old and I still have my VHS version which is very worn out. To comment on the very negative review at the bottom, it's really not about the fact that in just about all the classic Disney movies the female is searching and waiting for her Prince, okay it's a fantasy we get it as adults. The music is what captures the inner child and the story about a girl who saves a good looking guy who thinks she's hot too and wants to be with her despite their differences, he's a human prince and she is different, but very much the same when it comes to how she feels about him. She grew-up (under the sea). For kids growing up in the eighties there were not a lot of princesses of color to identify with so Ariel is kinda symbolic of that change for the Disney succession movies to portray other princesses that were different from the classics(i.e Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, Snow White etc.). Yay! I'm getting this one!
The Little Mermaid is my ALL TIME FAVORITE MOVIE!!!!!!!!! Even if i'm 14 I LOVE THAT MOVIE!!!!! I've always wanted to be a mermaid, but I know it's impossible! I don't care, maybe mermaids are real!!!!!!!!!!!!
A lovely tale of a mermaid who wishes to walk to the land and the twists and turns during the quest to pursue her dreams. A timeless Disney classic featuring memorable songs and a wonderful musical background score.
The release of this film broke a dry spell in Disney history and restored brilliance and shine to the Disney name. Its original musical score set higher standards for all movies (not just animation). Previous animated Disney films only included maybe one or two songs at the most sung by title characters. Disney hits like Aladdin, Beauty and The Beast and The Lion King were made possible because of success and artistry of The Little Mermaid. Recently Disney has abandoned the idea of animated musicals, which in my opinion is a big mistake. While the Pixar movies are very good, they are in their own category. And while Phil Collins and Randy Newman are talented musicians, they cannot replace story-related music sung by the characters of a film. Tarzan is a perfect example of a movie with great potential, that because of the musical choices, fell short. If Disney wants to uphold the standard of quality shown in The Little Mermaid and the handful of movies that followed, they need to hire composers and lyricists similar to Howard Ashman and Alan Menken. Until then I will hold my breath every time a Disney film is released. I hold Disney dear to my heart because of the musicals.
I love these kinds of disney movies and thought the little mermaid was alright but not exactly a favorite but either way its still a good buy. for some reason Ariel sort of annoyed me at times. I'm not saying i hate her or the movie. so please don't take offense. flounder was adorable as well as Sebastian. a scene i remembered well that i couldn't help but laugh was when Sebastian tries to not get killed by the Chef. The expressions shown on their faces was hilarious. This is the story of a mermaid who trades her voice for legs and falls for eric.
In response to that last reviewer... It's a child's movie... culture... vivid descriptions and explanations of various things from language to biological composition. What exactly do you want a documentary on a fictional race of sea-beings? Like I said this is a child's movie... great for children.
I absolutely love this movie! I have since I first saw it as a young child when it came out. Ariel is definately my favorite Disney princess, and Eric is one of the best princes! The music is masterful as well.
