Overview

At the height of their TV fame, Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz were contracted by MGM to make two theatrical films. The first of these, The Long, Long Trailer, stars Lucy and Desi as an upwardly mobile couple who decide to buy a trailer so they can live together while his job takes him around the country. Thanks to their naivete in such matters, they end up with a huge, bulky RV that costs five times what they planned. Their "seeing America" trip turns out to be a slapstick disaster, topped by Lucy's foolish decision to hide a heavy rock collection in the trailer; as Desi tries to maneuver a treacherous mountain road, the weighted-down home-on-wheels nearly loses its balance and almost tumbles off a cliff. The story is told in flashback, as Desi 'splains the breakup of his marriage to a motel court manager. Happily, Lucy shows up, goes "Waaaaah" a little, and all is forgiven. Despite the fact that audiences were getting Ball and Arnaz for free each week on television, The Long, Long Trailer was a big hit at the box-office. The film was adapted by Albert Hackett and Frances Goodrich from a novel by Clinton Twiss, with uncredited assistance from the I Love Lucy writing staff.

Newlyweds Nicky and Tacy Collini embark on the road of life together in a gargantuan mobile home, and it's all downhill from there in this star vehicle for Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz. Director Vincente Minnelli keeps this freewheeling comedy rolling along. Scenes of broad slapstick -- Nicky demolishing a relative's garden with the trailer, Tacy attempting to cook dinner during a herky-jerky drive -- merge with more intimately observed scenes of the couple getting to know each other. Lucy and Desi, their palpable chemistry honed both in life and on their beloved TV series, handle comedic and dramatic moments with equal aplomb. Seen all too briefly are Keenan Wynn as an aggravated traffic cop and Marjorie Main (Ma and Pa Kettle) and Howard McNear (Floyd the Barber on The Andy Griffith Show) as fellow "trailerites." One of the most popular comedies of its time, The Long, Long Trailer comes to DVD packed with extra features that replicate an old-fashioned night at the movies, including a classic Tex Avery cartoon ("Dixieland Droopy") and a vintage comedy short (Pete Smith's "Ain't It Aggrivatin' "). Even non-Lucy fans will enjoy this ride.

The Long, Long Trailer is a star vehicle through and through, and it's fortunate that it has the inimitable likes of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz to give it power. It doesn't hurt that the reliable Vincente Minnelli is on hand to steer it, either; while Trailer may not allow Minnelli to really strut his stuff, he still gives it a professional, polished production, and the movie definitely benefits visually from his keen eye, especially in his use of color. Albert Hackett and Frances Goodrich's screenplay is serviceable, but it's really nothing more than a series of comedic incidents -- some of them well worn, indeed -- that give the stars a chance to shine. There's very little here that wouldn't be right at home on Lucy and Desi's TV show, and that familiarity becomes a bit wearing after a while. Many viewers will probably keep waiting for something fresh, but neither that nor a satisfying payoff ever comes, making the film ultimately seem as if it has been stretched too thin over too long a time. Still, Trailer is worth watching if for no other reason than to see the comedic duo going through their always engaging paces in color for a change.

    Honeymoon horrors

    This is a movie I have loved ever since I was a little girl and watched it with my parents. I have now shared this movie with my own kids. The best thing about this movie is that it is appropriate for every one. It is just good old-fashioned fun, comedy and dealing with those little things in life. It is well written and acted and there are some beautiful scenes in yosemite.

    When Tacy talks her soon to be husband, Nick, into buying a trailer so she can "make a home for him" instead of having to rent a house everywhere they go, they have no idea what they are truly getting themselves into. Things start going wrong and it puts their love to the test.

    What fun!

    Pack your suitcase and climb on board - this is classic movie comedy at its best! Sharp, witty dialogue, great acting, and beautiful color make it a fun getaway for all ages.

    our family favorite

    Our family camps and travels with a trailer. When we watch this movie our troubles seem small. This is one of the best movies we have ever watched. We never get tired of watching this movie, it is nice to step back to a nicer era when people did not have interstates to travel 85 mph. and there where no cell phones, you could actually get away from it all.

    Good movie for a ''Long Long'' time.

    This movie is a regular watch in our house. My wife and I love this movie. This is a love story, adventure and comedy all in one very funny movie. I'ts a make you feel good movie, with some nice old nostalgia. If you own, or are about to own, a trailer, I strongly recommend you watch this movie before you buy a trailer, OH, I mean ''Rig''. If you like comedies, I sugest you add this movie to your colection.
