Overview

New Zealand filmmaker Peter Jackson fulfills his lifelong dream of transforming author J.R.R. Tolkien's best-selling fantasy-epic into a three-part motion picture that begins with this holiday 2001 release. Elijah Wood stars as Frodo Baggins, a Hobbit resident of the medieval "Middle-Earth" who discovers that a ring bequeathed to him by beloved relative and benefactor Bilbo (Ian Holm) is in fact the "one ring," a device that will allow its bearer to manipulate dark powers and enslave the world. Frodo is charged by the wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) to return the ring to Mount Doom, the evil site where it was forged millennia ago and the only place where it can be destroyed. Accompanying Frodo is a fellowship of eight others: his Hobbit friends Sam (Sean Astin), Merry (Dominic Monaghan), and Pippin (Billy Boyd); plus Gandalf; the human warriors Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen) and Boromir (Sean Bean); Elf archer Legolas (Orlando Bloom); and Dwarf soldier Gimli (John Rhys-Davies). The band's odyssey to the dreaded land of Mordor, where Mount Doom lies, takes them through the Elfish domain of Rivendell and the forest of Lothlorien, where they receive aid and comfort from the Elf princess Arwen (Liv Tyler), her father Elrond (Hugo Weaving), and Queen Galadriel (Cate Blanchett). In pursuit of the travelers and their ring are Saruman (Christopher Lee) -- a traitorous wizard and kin, of sorts, to Gandalf -- and the Dark Riders, under the control of the evil, mysterious Sauron (Sala Baker). The Fellowship must also do battle with an ogre, flying spies, Orcs, and other deadly obstacles both natural and otherwise as they draw closer to Mordor. Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring (2001) was filmed in Jackson's native New Zealand simultaneously with its pair of sequels, The Two Towers (2002) and The Return of the King (2003).

Special Features

A two-DVD set featuring a widescreen presentation of the movie; an exclusive 10-minute behind-the-scenes preview of The Two Towers; three in-depth behind-the-scenes documentaries, including "Welcome to Middle-earth" (in-store special as shown by Houghton Mifflin), "The Quest for the Ring" (as debuted on the FBC Network), "A Passage to Middle-earth" (as premiered on the Sci-Fi Channel); 15 featurettes exploring the locales and cultures of Middle-earth; interviews with cast members Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Viggo Mortensen, Liv Tyler, and others; Enya "May It Be" music video; an inside look at the Special Extended DVD Edition of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring; preview of Electronic Arts' video game, The Two Towers; DVD-ROM features.

Editorial Reviews

Rolling Stone
1/2
Fellowship is the real deal, a movie epic that pops your eyes out, piles on thrills and fun, and yet stays intimately attuned to character.
New York Times
The playful spookiness of Mr. Jackson's direction provides a lively, light touch, a gesture that doesn't normally come to mind when Tolkien's name is mentioned.
Time Magazine
Though faithful in every detail to Tolkien, it has a vigorous life of its own -- grandeur, moral heft and emotional depth.
Los Angeles Times
Made with intelligence, imagination, passion and skill, propulsively paced and shot through with an aged-in-oak sense of wonder, the trilogy's first film so thrillingly catches us up in its sweeping story that nothing matters but the vivid and compelling events unfolding on the screen.

Though faithful in every detail to Tolkien, it has a vigorous life of its own -- grandeur, moral heft and emotional depth.

    The great movie to own!

This is one of the best movies I have seen for the year so far!!!, after I saw the moview, I read the book. I must say, the book is not that much different from the movie...oviously the book is more detailed...the second part of the movie, I anticipate will be even better, because the book was a page turner.... after I had finished reading the entire book, in my mind I could envision the actual movie... the book was very clear and I can't wait to see the second part. the special effects are absolutely stunning. The directors did a great job with everything.

Excellent movie follows the book very well!!

If you love JRR Tolkiens Lord of the Rings or fantasy/adventure you have to see Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings Trilogy!! Elija Wood (Frodo), Orlando Bloom (Legolas), Viggo Mortensen (Stider/Aragorn), Sir Ian McKellen (Gandalf), Hugo Weaving (Elrond) and the others are outstanding!! This is a movie that does some justice to the book despite a few differences between them!! Excellent a must see!

    ''My Precious...''

I have watched so many movies... too many, maybe. But never had any of them ever etched in my mind as much as the FOTR did. The visual effects and cinematography are stunning. Every scene is breathtaking -- The Shire, Rivendell, Lothlorien, the Misty Mountains, the River Bruinen, the Great River Anduin, and even the darkest place like Moria. The casts are so perfect for their roles. The score is majestic. I have watched Beautiful Mind. How it beated the FOTR at the Academy Awards I still do not understand.

    Buy the DVD version instead

I have watched the DVD version many times. Very disappointed to find many scenes removed in the Blu ray version: Elrond's council, inside Moria, in Lorien. The story has lost a lot.

    I Love LOTR!!

I am probably LOTR's biggest fan!! (Although, I'm probably one of thousands who say that!;) This is one of my favorite movies, and always will be. You usually can't say that the movie was just as good as the book, but this one is..... and the book was amazing! I love all the characters. Merry and Pippin make it funny. All the actors did an amazing job. The special effects are great! Everything about the movie is great! Make sure you watch The Two Towers and The Return of the King. They get better each time! Which is amazing because I didn't think that it was possible after watching Fellowship of the Ring! I LOVE LOTR!!

    I Also Recommend:

    An Amazing Acheivement

This DVD is the first version of the first Lord of the Rings movies. In other words, the one that sparked the whole phenonmenon. Sure, maybe the extended editions or The Return of the King is better than this, but do you really want to be without the one that started it all? I don't think so! This film rocks, and it's got even better pacing than the extended version; it's well worth the money.

    The beginning of a Classic

What can be said about the movie that many thought would never be made. Everything from the casting to the actual film is FANTASTIC. I think the way Peter Jackson and his co-writers of this and the 2 sequels were able to extract the main story from the extensive books that are the LORD of the RINGS trilogy and make the films was tremendous. Many hard-core fans of the books were somewhat upset by what was left out but the movies were 3 hrs long each as they were.

    Wonderful film.

Kudos to Al. Certainly no Kudos to Karl. I consider this film my generation's Star Wars. If you're a little nervous about the fantasy genre, just remember, this film represents everything that makes our world go round. You will learn a lot from this trilogy. And get a good nine hours of entertainment as well. The story and characters are what make this film. The setting is just a colorful way to keep the watchers attention. Definately my favorite film of all time.

    To Karl...

Instead of bashing people who may disagree with your taste in movies, read a book. Then go and see the movie. Then if you don't like the movie, let us know why. When you make snap judgements about things you know nothing about, people tend to not have much respect for what you have to say.

    DORKS ! ! ! !

want to know why this movie sucked? i never read the books and am not a geek. the movie has a midget going to throw a ring into a mountain. that's it. how is that make for and epic movie? if you play dungeons and dragons, have been stuffed in a locker at school, or have tape on your glasses this is the movie for you. otherwise it's over 3 hours of elves, wizards, and trolls. if you like this movie put down your dragon model and re-evaluate your life.

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

This one is quite good and entertaining. The people who portrayed the characters are quite good with their roles and the costumes are excellent including the sword fighting, villians, monsters and the eye including of course the one ring to rule them all.
