Anthony Hopkins portrays the original Zorro, a hero to the downtrodden masses of 18th-century California, finally unmasked and imprisoned by the tyrannical Don Rafael Montero Stuart Wilson, who compounds his crimes by stealing Zorro's infant daughter and raising her as his own. Twenty years later, the aged Zorro returns, training the penniless bandito Alejandro Antonio Banderas in the use of whip and sword and enjoining him to don the mask of Zorro and lead the battle against Montero. In the process, Alejandro falls in love with Zorro's now-grown daughter, Elena, played in spirited fashion by the ravishing Catherine Zeta-Jones. Director Martin Campbell Goldeneye manipulates the Zorro legend ever so slightly to suit the demands of his sprawling story, but his tinkering is more than offset by the exuberance of his thrilling action set-pieces, the most elaborate ever filmed for a Zorro movie. The film contains plenty of humorous, tongue-in-cheek moments but never descends to the level of camp. All in all, The Mask of Zorro is an eminently worthy successor to earlier films featuring Johnston McCulley's fabled "Curse of Capistrano" and makes sterling entertainment for the entire family. This DVD Special Edition includes a commentary by Campbell, the documentary Unmasking Zorro which touches on the character's illustrious history, deleted scenes, a music video for the film's hit song, "I Want to Spend My Lifetime Loving You," a gallery of costume-designer sketches, and numerous trailers and TV spots.

An anomaly in the late '90s, the Mask of Zorro is a well-crafted, full-blooded adventure film, reminiscent of the Errol Flynn swashbucklers of Hollywood's golden age, with a tinge of contemporary irony. Antonio Banderas is ideally cast as the urchin who assumes the mask of the dashing Zorro from Don Diego de la Vega, who is brilliantly played by the protean Anthony Hopkins. Smoldering newcomer Catherine Zeta-Jones is more than a match for Banderas, as Elena, the beautiful, long-lost daughter of Don Diego. Set in the burgeoning California of 1821, the script artfully counterpoints action with character development, as the old-fashioned melodrama touches on themes of honor, betrayal, and revenge. Yet the film infuses them with humor and romance, most memorably in a scene in which the new Zorro "undresses" Elena by slashing her clothing to shreds. The film's considerable 100-million-dollar plus box-office success would launch the career of Zeta-Jones.

    Wonderful action movie,

    I'll watch anything with Antonio Banderas, and not just because of his looks, but because he really is talented and has a lot of range as an actor. Okay, so his looks don't hurt either. He of course is well suited for the role of Zorro, which he plays to perfection. Odd casting with Anthony Hopkins as the prior Zorro, since he's not even Mexican, and with those blue eyes and all!, but he is such a wonderful actor that you just go with it. Catherine Zeta Jones is also very good. This is just a splendid, and also funny, action movie. I would recommend the sequel too, it's almost as good.

    Wonderful!!!!!!!!!!

    This is one of the best movies I've ever seen! The movie mixes action, romance and humor so well! Antonio Bandares and Anthony Hopkins have a very good on-screen reletionship that makes it even sadder when Zorro dies. Catherine Zeta Jones is a very good acteress to play Elena. The Sequel's good but the movie doesn't have the deep feeling this has. Except for the head this is a EXCELLENT movie.

    Romantical Adventure awaits you!!!***

    Im here to give u the facts and hip ways of this movie: .Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta Jones are great together. They acually seam like the charectors themselves. When they are next to each other they seem perfect!! .Anthony Hoppkins is a great actor and really plays out his charector well. Evn though he is not mexican. . The movie based by itself I would rate it a great adventure and romantic movie. When u see this movie for the first time u really can't stop wondering whats gonna happen. You will be supprised on how good this movie is when u watch it. Overall If u are liking this kind of movies GO WATCH IT THEN!!

    Passionately Beautiful

    Anthony Hopkins plays Diego de le Vega, sentanced to twenty years in prison for being the masked El Zorro. Antonio Banderas is the young Alejandro Murrietta, out for revenge against Captain Love (Matt Letscher) for murdering his brother. And radient newcomer Catherine Zeta-Jones is the object of both their affections, as Diego's long-lost daughter, and Alejandro's love interest, in this stirring and passionate return of Zorro to the big screen. With supurb music, ravishing special effects, and awesome swordplay, this is one spectical you don't want to miss! Included on the DVD is the making of featurette, trailors, and promos. All in all, worth a spin in your equitment, and a cheer for worth!
