Overview

What if virtual reality wasn't just for fun, but was being used to imprison you? That's the dilemma that faces mild-mannered computer jockey Thomas Anderson (Keanu Reeves) in The Matrix. It's the year 1999, and Anderson (hacker alias: Neo) works in a cubicle, manning a computer and doing a little hacking on the side. It's through this latter activity that Thomas makes the acquaintance of Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne), who has some interesting news for Mr. Anderson -- none of what's going on around him is real. The year is actually closer to 2199, and it seems Thomas, like most people, is a victim of The Matrix, a massive artificial intelligence system that has tapped into people's minds and created the illusion of a real world, while using their brains and bodies for energy, tossing them away like spent batteries when they're through. Morpheus, however, is convinced Neo is "The One" who can crack open The Matrix and bring his people to both physical and psychological freedom. The Matrix is the second feature film from the sibling writer/director team of Andy Wachowski and Larry Wachowski, who made an impressive debut with the stylish erotic crime thriller Bound.

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Kryssa Schemmerling
Take a pinch of The Terminator, a dash of William Gibson's computer cowboy sensibility, add a healthy dollop of Hong Kong action cinema and the result is The Matrix, the most inventive science fiction flick to light up a movie screen in recent years. Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne), a super-cool, philosophy-spouting rebel with psychic abilities, and his latex-sheathed female sidekick, Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss), turn disaffected computer wiz Neo (Keanu Reeves) into a kung fu-fighting warrior who goes head to head against the forces of evil deep in cyberspace. Even if some viewers get lost in the twisting storyline, the dazzling special effects and mind-blowing sets will keep most of them on the very edge of their seats.
All Movie Guide - Lucia Bozzola
"What is The Matrix?" In the hands of writer/directors Andy Wachowski and Larry Wachowski, The Matrix proved to be an exhilarating comic book/Hong Kong/sci-fi treatise on the nature of reality for the Keanu Reeves crowd. With Sydney, Australia, standing in for an ominously green-tinged Any City, the initiation of Reeves' ace hacker Neo into the Real World by Laurence Fishburne's super-cool Morpheus and Carrie-Anne Moss' patent leather-clad cyber babe Trinity sets off the ultimate conflict between man and malevolent machine. Regardless of that conflict's philosophical bent, the real attraction became The Matrix's trailblazing special effects and bravura set pieces, including airborne kung fu, time-bending, bullet-dodging shoot-outs, and an ultra-stylized, slow-motion lobby fusillade. Along with sweeping the four technical Oscars for which it was nominated, including Best Visual Effects and Best Editing, The Matrix's sleekly kinetic action attracted legions of fans, turning it into not only a bona fide blockbuster (and an MTV Movie Award winner), but also a top-selling DVD. While its open ending hinted at further adventures to come, The Matrix's financial success guaranteed that the Wachowskis' plans for two sequels would indeed come to fruition.

It is the 21st century. Humans have exhausted every source of energy there is, and the sun is gone. Yet, the world is full of life, nature, and people living out their own lives. This is the matrix. It is the world we know, but it is not the reality. The matrix is a computer generated dream world designed to keep humans under control. We live our entire lives in this computer program, which uses complex coding to make our brain perceive this illusion as the reality. The whole world is oblivious to the computer generated world they live in, and just how much technology is really determining their lives. Everything about this world is a designed by computer coding: the buildings, the people, the food... They send signals telling your brain it is real. Your life is HCI, human-computer interaction. There is nothing, but the computer. This is a thrilling and compelling movie, demonstrating the full capabilities of technology and how it will shape our future as the human race. This movie shows us a world in which the computer is powerful enough to even fool those that created it, the humans.

The Matrix was a fascinating movie, that explores the relationship between man and machine. Neo, the main character, must save human kind.  The advent of artificial intelligence has led to computers taking over humans.  They use them as a source of energy and most humans do not even realize that this is happening.  They live in an alternate society called the Matrix, that is constructed by the computers.  Neo, one of the few characters that is aware of the situation must fight for the survival of the human race.  The movie is enjoyable to watch, but most importantly addresses the ongoing issue between humans and technology.  How far is too far? While the world has benefitted greatly from the invention and evolution of computers and technology.  However, each new invention brings up areas of concern involving possible abuses or pitfalls.  Nowhere is this more true than in the area of artificial intelligence.  As of now, computers can do a lot of things faster or better than humans, but they lack the qualities that make humans unique.  There is always the question of how far to push technology, and this one in particular.  While the Matrix seems far fetched, progress has been made in artificial intelligence, and therefore as a society, we must be aware of the dangers.  The Matrix shows the viewer what might happen as a result of creating computers that are too advanced.  While this is a science fiction movie, it certainly does give the viewer something to contemplate regarding the complex relationship between man and machine!

This movie was an interesting exploration of the future implications of virtual reality and what it could potentially mean for our society. In the beginning of the movie, life appears to be completely normal, but you soon realize that all of the characters are living inside of a computer simulation. In this time period, artificially intelligent machines have grown so powerful that they were able to defeat the entire human race in a massive battle. Now, humans are harnessed as an energy source for the machines and live their lives plugged into a simulation called the Matrix, as the title of the movie states. Their body heat provides power from the machines, and humans are essentially turned into batteries.  The main character, Neo, is one of the few people that's able to see through the simulation, and he embarks on a journey to save society in the first part of the trilogy. Most sci-fic and action movies are simply a blur of fighting and noise, but this makes you really think about the relationship between humans and machines and possible ways that it will develop in the future. Humans created AI in the movie, and this is true in real life as well. The movie is terrifying because it extends our own lives into a horrible dystopian universe that could very well become our own future. People are sedated, living a virtual life, and Neo must be plugged into different simulations so that he can realize that the Matrix isn't real when he is inside the simulation. He can still die within the simulation, and his main enemies are machines called the Agents. This movie really made me ponder whether humans are becoming too dependent on artificial intelligence and the possible implications of our relationship with machines in the future.

What is the Matrix? That¿s the question everyone¿s looking to answer in this sci-fi spectacular from Wachowski brothers. One thing it was -- groundbreaking both in the spectacular special effects that we¿ve since taken for granted. Computer hacker extraordinaire Neo (Reeves) has this gut feeling that life isn¿t all that it seems to be. Turns out he¿s right in a big way. A group of revolutionaries led by the thought to be mythical Morpheus open his eyes to the Matrix. The Matrix, it turns out, is nothing more than an elaborate computer generated reality intended to mollify humanity who are in reality nothing more than sheep or in this case a renewable energy source, to feed the machines that have inherited the Earth. Morpheus believes Neo is ¿The One¿, a prophesized savior who can bend the Matrix to his own will who will eventually lead humanity out of slavery.

The movie I'm reviewing is The Matrix . This is the best action movie that was ever made to this date. Starring in this movie is Keanu Reeves in which he plays the one , " N eo". Laurence Fishburne plays ring leader of the matrix he plays "Morpheus". Through out the movie Morpheus tells N eo that he is T he O ne. Neo constantly insisted on that he wasn't T he O ne. This movie had non - stop action literally from the time you put it in till the time you took it out. Neo also had a love interest ; Trinity played by Carrie Anne Moss. So time and time again , Morpheus tries to convince n N eo that he's the one but he doesn't believe him. Overall this movie is a very good thing to add to your collection of dvd's .

I was a little skeptical at first before I saw this movie, but when I watched it I was amazed. It is a great movie! One of the BEST out there! Neo(Keanu Reeves) is being contacted by Morpheus, a man he has never met. Neo doesn't understand what is going on or futher-more what the Matrix is. And his world and everything he knows is about be turned upside-down when he finds out. To be warned though- it does have it's share of language, less than what I thought it would have though, and in the starting it is really weird and freaky. But the ending is spectacular! The plot and fights are amazing! Keanu Reeves is amazing! This movie is amazing! You can't afford to miss it!

Definitely Keanu Reaves’s best acting ever. The Matrix is a incredible sci-fi action ride that has you hanging on the edge of your seat until the very end. Kung-fu, conspiracy theories, and bullet dodging all come together in a truly harmonic film. The best film of the 90's in my opinion. The incredible blending of artwork and power will leave you breathless at the end. Action sci-fi movies are one thing. All I have to do is look up Star Wars (no offence intended) for a sci-fi/action. But to have an action that leaves you deep in thought at the end, I take off my nonexistant hat to the Wachowski brothers on this one. My final word: Buy it. See it. Love it (or don't, but at least see it!).

This movie is one of the most thought provoking movies I've seen to date. There is an excellent mix of sci-fi and action, and the philosophical concepts woven into the mix only enhance the viewing process. If you have not already seen this movie, please go out and see it; it's fantastic. The movie explodes into action in the first scene and continues forward, never letting up until the end. Th scenes are sculpted in such a way that, by the end of the movie, the viewer can't help but be immersed in the story. Unfortunately, I don't think anyone can be told how good The Matrix is, you'll have to see for yourself!

The impression this film has made on the world has been phenomenal, and I'm one of the believers. This was truly a gift from above. It is amazing how this film was created, with visual effects other filmmakers could only dream of.

This is the daddy of the Matrix Revolution. The budjet is only $35 million (compared to the other sequels, which break $100 mill) Get and watch this movie now before it's too late. There are still many people who have not entered the Matrix. Reloaded and Revolutions are the most hotly anticipated sequels in 2003. So please, if you have no idea what a Duracell battery has to do with human life, or why agent pop out of everyday people, do youself a favor and see the movie.

This has to be the best action movie in the world! Not only did it have great actors in it, it had a twisty plot too. I can't wait for the sequels, ''Matrix:Reloaded'' and ''Matrix:Revolutions''(I think those are the titles). I loved the scene were Neo and Trinity walk into that Federal building and fight the security guards! That scene rocked!!! Buy this movie if you are a kung fu-action-scifi nut!!!

Keanu as an action hero? I didn't think it possible, but it's true. Everyone does an amazing job in this film. One of the best sci-fi movies of all time. This movie came out of nowhere and just blew everyone away. The special FX are outstanding and I just hope the sequels are half as good.

Movie Review Starring Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss, Hugo Weaving, and Joe Pantoliano Directed and written by Larry and Andy Wachowski. 1999 R Neo playing as the only solution to stoping the AI. After providing some disks, following a white rabbit, meeting Trinity at a club, he finds himself being followed by law enforcement agents for no reason. He begins to have strange dreams and even witnesses those pursuing him bend reality. The truth to all this is only Morpheus, the leader of the ship Nebukanezzar, who reveals to him that the current world is actually an illusion. He is the only one to explain what is going on to Neo. This massive situation is created by a massive computer that has taken over. They were designed to suck our thoughts dry. They made them believe that the world they live in is really real. But I wonder how Morpheus escape the Matrix. The matrix is really created by artificially intelligent. Who use humans as their power source. It was the only solution they had to keep themselves alive and active. Man's work on machines led to the creation of the AI, which it expanded. It is unreasonable to expect that any intelligence could remain in for long, and soon enough, the AI life forms and the humans wage a war against each other. The AI creatures are initially designed to use solar power believed to be a long-lasting source of energy, but a nuclear winter changes the situation. The AI forms adapt by using humans as batteries. To this end, they create a tub or something where the humans are raised to believe they lead existences as if nothing ever happened. Neo is the only result they have to unlock the secrets of The Matrix. He is found by a man named Morpheus, the leader. Who have escaped the matrix and are now fighting against the AI beings to expose the truth. Neo is also in danger because of the Sentient Agents. Led by the Agent Smith, the Sentient Agents are intelligent programs within the matrix that act to reinforce the AI control of earth's populace. They want to make sure he dies so there plan could work. In this movie I think it is trying to show us that these AI intelligent would probably hunt us in the future if we continue searching for more technology and playing with machines. I think that this movie is good because of course I like the fight scenes they are cool.

The Matrix. Real or Sci-Fi you choose. Imagine jumping from the top of one building to another 10 feet away. Is that even possible? These death defying stunts make you wonder can they physically be done or just made up in your mind and made only by special effects. Keanu Reeves stars as Neo Henderson in a movie were nearly everything is possible. The mind is endless and there are no boundaries. In a quest to find hiself Neo starts the beginning of his life in the real world. A.I. Artificial Intellegence has taken over and drawn the humans under ground into sewer systems. The earth as we know it does not exist. All they have is a place a city near the earth's core called Zion. They need someone to save mankind. To bring Earth back. They suspect it is Neo. Morpheous believes it so much that he puts his life at risk. He believes that he is the one. That he can stop bullets and defeat A.I. So is Neo really capable of stopping bullets with his mind? Their is such a thing as Telekenisis(forgive the spelling) which is the gift of moving objects with your mind. Or is he just in a state where he is dreaming? The mind is something unique that has many hidden wonders because we only use 10% of our brain. So imagine what we can do with the other 90%. So is Neo the one? Watch The Matrix and find out.
